Petrol and Diesel Engines Future Proof?

I know that the petrol vs diesel debate is long and tired at this stage, but one question.

As the years go on, I'm sure that bio-diesel and bio-petrol (ethanol?) will pick up pace a little bit. Considering that bio-diesel would be easier to make as you don't need a license to distill it (as far as I know), would that not put diesels more in favor of future-proofing?

Or do I got me facts all wrong?
