Sarcasm definitely doesn't come across on net!

Serious question here-we have open's in each province-so why is this not the Ulster open?

it just seems like the Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan don't get an open..

He is referring to people on top who cannot pass guard and insist on disengaging.
This is:
A. illegal under the rules.
B. Cowardly in a grappling competition.
It's not MMA, you MUST engage the guard. Some refs are far to lenient on this. (Glad you're a fan :) )

Neither do I obviously.
I picked your comment up wrong. I thought you were giving out about ''butt scooting'' and saying people who didnt go for a takedown and pass were mongos. I remembered Tom sitting down at grapplepalooza, knowing how much you respect him, I made a rushed comment.
My apologies

My apologies
He didn't "sit down", he made contact with the opponent and then sat into guard. If his opponent wants to avoid this he has to be quicker and establish contact first or prevent the guard pull by either holding his opponent up or catching the leg and getting takedown points. You can't just "sit down" in BJJ.

People in BJJ don't understand the guard pulling/grip rule really. It would probably be a good idea for people to ask their coaches on that. I certainly got some clarification on it at the ref's course.

Just out of interest, what rule covers it, do you have a link?

A-) The athlete will only be allowed to kneel after having taken hold of his opponents kimono.

B-) When either of the athletes run to one of the extremities of the ring to avoid combat, or while ground fighting flee by crawling or rolling out of the ring or by standing up avoiding engaging or purposely stepping out of the ring to gain time.
from: http://www.ibjjf.org/rules.htm

Not the clearest but you get the idea. Once A takes a grip he can sit or kneel to the ground, at that point if B avoids engaging (i.e. breaks the grip and backs off) that is a foul.

FYI they're bringing out a new rulebook very soon, portuguese version is already finished, english one has had actual translators working on it. So should be 100x better than what we have at the minute!

here is a link to the IBJJF rules page http://www.ibjjf.org/rules.htm

specifically you are looking for Article 5, Fouls not as Serious, part E..

E-) When the athlete stalls the fight, holding his adversary and, not seeking to engage or gain submissions when in the guard, on top, or on the bottom.

Holding the opponent, standing up, or any position designed to stall. Noticing this the referee will request that 20 seconds be marked and say “LUTE”, making the gesture. At the end of the 20 seconds if the athlete hasn’t changed his position or shown visible signs of engagement, the referee say again “LUTE” and make the same gesture, penalising the atlhete and giving an advantage for the other, if he continues stalling the referee will stop the fight saying “PAROU”, and he will penalise the same, giving 2 points for the other, and both athletes will return to their feet at neutral positions. With the possibility of disqualification on the next offence

Hehe i guess its covered more than once!

New rulebook in portuguese, some of it is actually pretty easy to understand because there are lots of pictures.

I believe it has been asked already but I haven't seen a response - is there going to be a white belt absolute division? They have been pretty fun at the last few competitions I've been to

Is there teen? The best way to grow any sport is through the juniors

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭weemate

we will try to put a teen section on if there are enough numbers.....so far I have entries from my own team and no-one else.......the sooner we get the forms in then we can have a better idea of categories.
we have been contacted by some teens from different teams so I would imagine we will have enough on the day.

I have 3 interested teens but they have no transport obviously so have to arrange in advance. If you're definitely putting a teen section on I'll ask them but until they know for sure there's a competition for them to enter I can't imagine their parents commiting to bring them. Let me know when you know.

Mark, 1 purple belt with Christmas flab on him competing anyway. No heel hugs though.

Sweet! I'm sure we can have a vale tudo match with heel hugs outside in the car park :D

The teen section at our last nogi was a good size. Maybe about 25 of them altogether

I would imagine a good few would be interested.
