No more sequels than any other year tbh!

    And there's a reason why!

It's pretty good to see Thor and Captain American in the #10 though. Marvel must be wetting themselves with joy.

This is one I am looking forward to, very good cast.

I haven't seen them, but they strike me as essentially being sequels, I mean, how long have Thor or Captain America been around? Plus I just feel a bit over-saturated with superhero / comic book movies lately, probably the reason I haven't seen them.

This is the only movie I'm looking forward to in 2012.

Me too, though I've heard that they are ending it completely different to the book, and the way they are doing so does not sound good
I'm not even going to spoiler tag it, as I refuse to accept what I've heard

I don't think you can necessarily refer to Thor or Captain America as sequels as such, because they're not following anything. Admittedly, Captain America did have a terrible version released during the 1990s.

As for World War Z, I don't mind if they end it somewhat differently, depending on how it's filmed throughout. The budget they seem to have and the few screencaps I've seen have been enough to whet my appetite.

:eek: How could The Dark Night Rises not be in your list???:eek:

Well I meant they're sequels in the sense that the stories are pretty established. I mean, before their release, a lot of people would have a general idea of what both the characters are all about. I think I'll give them a watch though, I remember Thor looking pretty entertainig from the trailers, they just sort of passed me by in the Summer.

I'm pretty excited by WWZ, the book was brilliant, and pretty despondant in parts, so I just hope thay capture the sense of hoplessness in it. Eitherway, regardless of what I've heard about the end, I'll definitely bewatching it!

Quite a few of those movies are not even green lit/getting made much less coming out in 2012.

I don't know what Indiana Jones 5 is doing on there. Lucas says he still hasn't worked out what the macguffin is yet. It took him 15 years to come up with the last one.

Where's this list from? Can't see many of them being released in 2012.

I wonder if Harrison Ford will be back as Indiana Jones or are they still trying to replace him with Shia le Beouf, which they seemed to be doing with the previous one.

@hidinginthebush, by that logic, would you consider the first Harry Potter movie to be a sequel, because people were relatively familiar with the characters by that point?

Thor was relatively enjoyable but I was left feeling very cold by Captain America. Just couldn't take Chris Evan's being a small skinny guy seriously at the beginning.

No I wouldn't, but I see your point. I guess the point I was trying to make was they weren't new ideas or concepts.

Very few films are, even before the last ten years. Some of the greatest films ever made were based on books.

It's because producers and studios are too scared to bring out movies that don't already have a mass following (through sequels, remakes, adaptations of books). Inception was probably the last movie that was a totally original idea, which also made a fortune at the box office. I was hoping that this may have spurned studios to producing more of the same, but looking at that list it really doesn't seem likely.

Guess the reason that it's so good to see that Thor and Captain America did do so well at the box office, because for years the graphical novel/comic book was a really relatively small niche market.

Funnily enough thats one of the few genuine movies on there, but its actually a prequel and its going to be called Xerxes. Not sure if its out in 2012 though.

Apparently it's either a prequel based around the disco-dictator Xerxes, or something to do with the battle of Thermopylae, and Frank Miller had a truckload of cash pushed infront of him to come up with the idea / comic / whatnot.

I'm looking forward to the adaptation of Les Miserables- the cast looks promising.

Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe as the cream of the crop.
Hope it's better than the last attempt(1998 with Liam Neeson)-having said that, this at least, will be the musical version.

i hope 2012 will bring some nice films to watch , i recently read online that the production company behind happy feet 2 had sacked 600 employees because the movie was a big disappointment , that is why every time i see a movie title with a number if front of it , i dont watch it untill i get the reviews . for example rocky 7 !!! how is this gonna excite my imagination !!

Why is it that every year when this topic comes up people will moan about how sequels are destroying cinema and the only good films are foreign films.

There are dozens and dozens of great films from all around the world released each year. Yes many of them go straight to DVD but for anyone who takes the time to look around and go slightly out of their way there is no shortage of great films released each year.

For those who seem to think that the local multiplex is the place to go well the same thing applies. Don't write off a film because it's a sequel, the past year saw numerous sequels in prominent series and many of them are amongst the years biggest surprises, receiving great reviews and being entertaining as hell

That truckload of cash should have been pushed in front of him to come up with a Sin City Sequel and to not direct it.

you are reading my mind , why is it with sequels always not as good as the original movie , do production companies do that in purpose to get people to watch the third movie ??

Loads of sequels / remakes surpasse their originals, but lets not get into that fight, at least not in this thread.

This is the only movie I'm looking forward to in 2012.

Is Brad Pitt trying to be in every movie? He's everywhere! ( Not that I'm complaining)

As an aside, (and slightly related, I guess) a mate of mine forwarded on this years Black List to me. For those of you that don't know of it, the blurb reads thusly:
The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.

This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.

You can see the list and the previous ones here.

I'd guess, since it takes a while to produce a film, that you'd want to have a look at the 2011 and 2010 lists to see which ones are likely to come out. And keep in mind that a lot of these won't come out at all. And this list is also based on what executives thought were good scripts, not necessarily bankable ones, or ones that would definitely make a great film (Dream House is an excellent example).

And finally, you also have to realise that it's very difficult to write a logline for a film that makes the film sound good, unless it's something simple like "Sharktopuss - It's a motherf*cking shark and octopuss in one!!!!", in which case you can't hide how awesome that film turns out.

For example, The Social Network is: “The story of the founders of the social networking website Facebook and how overnight success and wealth changed their lives”, which doesn't sound too interesting at all.

So, just thought I'd share that with you, so you can have a rough idea what to expect in 2012/2013.

What movies will/have been released in the hope of winning an Oscar does anyone know? Moneyball and Tinker Tailor will be in with a shout I presume.

I remember around this time last year we had The Fighter, Black Swan, The Kings Speech, 127 Hours and True Grit all being released.

and indy 5 is still in development so wont be seeing that till probaby 2014

also most of the film favoured for best pic seem to have already been released bar warhorse, the decendants, and girl with dragon tattoo, id find it hard to believe no more worthy films would be released closer to the deadline,
