Stupid Laws That Protect You Against Yourself!

Has anyone ever wondered how stupid we've become? What is the point of seatbelt laws? I'm sure everyone is aware that if they do not wear a seatbelt, they have a greater chance of being killed, right? But seatbelts only protect you....they have no bearing on the other guy you crash into. So why punish someone for not protecting themselves..??

Same with drugs. If someone goes and gets shitfaced stoned, of who's business is it what they are doing? The consequences of that is only hurting themselves. So why is it against the law? What other stupid laws can you think of that should be abolished?

Um I think the ones like the seatbelt laws are there to re-enforce how dangerous it is. Just saying...

Here's hoping the passenger behind you in the car never hurtles their skull into yours in a car crash. After all, seatbelts only save the person wearing them.

    I need a facepalm, where's my facepalm?

Wearing a seatbelt saves any passengers in the car getting bashed by your stupid head in the event of a crash.

NO wonder they need to spend huge money from the taxpayers on these awareness ads. The Irish people are far too slow to have the basic intelligence to stay safe.

"make sure you press the red button on your smoke alarm" etc...

Really incredible stuff...you think other countries do this? Massive nanny state

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭Kasabian

    OP, do you belt up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭noxqs

Is it so hard to put on a seat belt? It doesn't take an advanced degree in mathematics to understand the physics involved and how a seat belt would save a lot of damage.

    Agreed on drug laws though.

Yeah, just like that drinking and driving rule. I'm a much better driver after 20 pints ffs.

Well, I suppose if everyone who didn't wear a seatbelt was killed outright, it'd be ok to have a choice about it (if you're alone in the car)..........but as people end up horribly disabled and mutilated and require lots of tax-payer funded care for the rest of their lives, maybe the government feels that less of that is better.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 778 ✭✭✭UsernameInUse

Yeah, just like that drinking and driving rule. I'm a much better driver after 20 pints ffs.

The guy that got away from the Gardai today would agree. He was locked.

And also, you're missing the point - drinking and driving would hurt other people. So would not wearing a seatbelt with someone else in the car. I'm talking about situations where you are the only one that suffers.

There is no rational argument for not wearing a seat belt. You can not use this argument in the same discussion about stupid laws such as laws against weed. There is plenty of rational arguments against drug laws.

Even if you are alone - why would you NOT wear a seat belt, does not compute.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭Kasabian

I am against a big brother attitude to life but some people need protecting from themselves. Darwin's law usually takes care of the rest.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,030 ✭✭✭✭Chuck Stone

    Seat belt laws are good.

Closing the off licences at 10pm = stupid.

Illegal drugs, (particularly weed) = stupid.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,137 ✭✭✭44leto

Because people are stupid as thick as planks. People would drive to the pub get **** faced and still drive home if the penalties were not so severe. People would not use safety equipment at work if they didn't have to.

And when they don't we all pay in higher taxes for treatments and court cases.

I must admit, I disagree with all laws except :

    No Murder
    No Rape
    No Stealing

that's the only Laws there should really be IMHO

    Everything else is just BS
If you get de-frauded then that is because you're stupid and the fraudster is clever, if you are stupid then you deserve to loose your money.

Seatbelts - who cares really. if you crash a car and aren't wearing a seatbelt then you deserve to die, don't punish the rest of us.

    And so on etc etc...

Good thread OP even though your seatbelt point is stupid.

Another stupid law is the limit on the number of panadol you can buy in shops.

Have you not seen the ad. "They say the guy without the seat belt did the damage"
Even though we can clearly see the other car drive into them, maybe the guy in the other car seen one of them wasn't wearing a seatbelt and thought he'd teach them a lesson. He was probably able to get out and say "I was wearing my seatbelt if only you were too I wouldn't have had to crash into your car" while they were dying.

Kidnapping - grand as long as it doesn't lead to murder
Extortion - this is just fraud, see point above.
    Arson - see kidnapping point
Destruction of property - see point 1
HIV - don't be silly, put a condom on that willy
Poisoning - see murder point above
HiJacking - grand as long as it doesn't lead to murder

I could go on but sure.............

But sure with ppl like you on the planet bending over for everything it's only a matter of time before there's a law for everything and oxegen is taxed.

Why should I have to change the way I think because "society" wouldn't like that - lol

well you could say you kidnapped somone to defraud the parents for money in which case that's extortion.

But you're just a troll & I don't feed trolls so this will be my last reply to you Seagull

So if you were a parent, and your child is kidnapped - that's just grand like, is it?

It's about making a valid, well reasoned point - not about making a popular one.

that's just tough luck really. Wrong place wrong time for the other driver or if you were in the same car as a passenger then it's your fault for getting into a car with someone else in the car who isn't wearing a seatbelt.

There's far too many humans on this planet at the mo anyway. Alot of us do need to be killed off to save Earth so why make a law about everything ?

Laws should be generalized into maybe the worst 10 or 20 crimes that one can commit, after that it should just be common sense & natural selection.

Laws were orignally put in place to protect & serve the people but now they are just used to control the masses these days and for nothing else IMO

Scraping you off the windscreen is an unpleasant task that has to be performed by persons who are almost invariably paid by the taxpayer. And traffic has to be diverted, and other people are late for work ...;);)

Same if you don't know how to handle drugs - and some eejits really can't - and you think you can fly and jump out of a window, where you might just land on someone like me, and the council will have the expense of cleaning up the pavement pizza ---

Not sure really. If nobody gets injured or killed then No, I suppose it shouldn't be a crime.

but at the same time I can certainly see your point and the insanity of mine but that's just how I feel about it.

Let me re-think it then and add the following :

    No Murder
No Damage to Property including : Burglary, Arson etc....
    No Rape
    No Stealing
basically anything that causes physical harm or costs money

I think that's it but could probably add more.
Fraud & extortion are okay in my book, again as long as nobody gets hurt (physically)
