    I have a friend <ahem> who has one of these bikes, does anyone know which replacement bearings are compatible?
    They are cage bearings but would like to change them for sealed bearings, is this possible?

    Shouldn't be a problem ihad a similar issue a few years ago with a spesh allez unfortunatly they make a non standard 1 so through digging on the either cane creek or else the fsa website there was a compatability chart. Word to the wise though, if your going to change them yourself please check out you tube tube for tutorials as if you fcuk it up you'll be in a world of hurt! I saw 1 guy where he hadn't taken out the old cups and had used a hammer and a piece of wood to wedge the new cups in onto the old ones.

    From memory,your bike has a standard A headset so you have a huge choice,Cane creak,Hope would be a massive upgrade but there are lots of cheaper ones out there too that will do just fine,but your LBS would be the best place to have it done as a headset press and crown race fitting tool are really needed.

    Thanks guys, its just the bearing race top and bottom that I need to change, the one I have are the cage type and just lift out. because they are the cage ones the wet roads have made ****e of them, so i was wondering whether the closed bearings will just drop into place of the old ones. i don't really want to change the whole headset.

    I'd personaly change the cups at the same time as the cartridges but if you don't have access to a head set press i'd get your lbs to do it

    There is a lack of bearing races for my Trek, so I have decided to purchase 1/8" loose ball bearings (these are the size of the ball bearings in the existing cage) and do away with the bearing retainer cage;

    I have been advised to use loose ball bearings and lots of them to completely fill the cup, then remove just one and this should be smoother and work a lot better than a bearing race.

    What could be simpler.......................?!

    just buy a new headset and save yourself the hassle.Chances are when you put in new bearings it'll still be rough and poxy,you can get a cheapo A headset for 30 beans in town last time i checked
