I'm thinking of buying 40' Sony LCD (EX503), can anybody say for certain if this will work with Saorview? It's not on the saorview approved list but friend told me it does work.

    Only buy an approved set.

42" is better value and hardly bigger. Many excellent approved models.

Your friend has a full test suite and a Lab and can test the Saorview features that RTE/TV3/TG4 are not using yet and can even test compliance of ones that are in use?

Yes it'll work, it has an MPEG-4 video decoder but not Saorview approved as Watty says. I have 2 older Sony TVs, non Saorview approved, that work ok with Saorview.

    This from the manual
    Colour/video system

Analogue: PAL, PAL60 (only video input), SECAM, NTSC3.58, NTSC4.43 (only video input)
    Digital: MPEG-2 MP@ML/HL, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC MP/HP@L4

I have that tv kdl40ex503 tv and it works with saorview. It gives 7 day listings but only the detailed information for the now and next program. It also works with the new digital text aswell. I have had no problems with it and have had it a year.

Thanks, only thing putting me off is guy in shop said it only comes with 3 month warranty. Thought most tvs etc come with 12 month warranty??

See this post re warranties and your statutory rights - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=68095747

Normally 12 month manufacturers warranty but your statutory rights extend to a minimum of 2 years.

The shop is probably covering themselves in case there is a change to the Saorview standard over the next 12 months as the the TV is not Saorview approved. But if there is a fault otherwise you're covered by your statutory rights to have it repaired etc.

Thanks for that, didn't know about statutory rights. Feel better about buying it now :)
