    Hi,

I am buying two pairs of white canvas shoes (cheap ones you get in dunnes or pennys) and I want to dye them orange and sky blue as part of a fancy dress costume. Can anyone tell me how I could go about this or would it even work? Sorry if this is in the wrong section

    Cheers

i imagine it would be along the same lines as tie-dying when you were younger.

AFAIK you can buy the powdered dye in art and hobby shops, you dump it into water (adjust accordingly for whatever colour you are trying to achieve) and then put the shoes in. as long as they are completely submerged for a suitable amount of time the dye should take and will not wash out.

i could be completely wrong so if anyone knows different please do correct me.

I did this in collage, they came out really light fro the washing machine. I was caught for time so I ended up spraying them with car spray!!

I would imagine if you painted them with some sort of waterbased paint that would do the job.

    Maybe acrylic paint?

You can buy fabric ink in O Sullivans art shop, Camden St, Dublin. just paint it on. Or use permanent markers.

I dyed a pair of canvas shoes for my daughter using dylon fabric dye- they came out fine except you're supposed to boil the garment and I was a bit wary of the rubber souls so I brought the dye to the boil in the pot with lots of salt (to set the dye) then took it off the heat and soaked them overnight. The next day I rinsed them out and dried them. Only thing was the colour was not as strong as on the packet so if you want a vibrant colour you might want to use two? Hope this helps. You can also get fabric markers which might be easier but you are supposed to iron over them to set them which could be tricky. Best of luck.
