Irish Open 12 Dublin?

Looks like it could be a runner according to Irish Examiner. Have to say I love the course in Killarney and was a decent spot to go watch. (personally would be handy to be able to stay at home and travel each day to it)

Where do you think the host venue will be? Portmarnock?

I know its Co Wicklow but would The European Club not be a front runner??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,017 ✭✭✭Leslie91

Dublin area?... Does that mean in Co. Dublin I wonder or close enough to Dublin?. Druids Glen would be considered Wicklow too right?. Not saying it should go there. Just wondering what they mean by Duiblin area.

I'm presuming it means something around Dublin ie not Kerry! Don't think The European has the infrastructure to host a European Tour event - would have thought Carton House would be an obvious choice?

Based on 2011, I would wager one whole of your Euro coins on it going to Killeen Castle!

Tbh i don't mind where it ends up just as long as it can secure a long term sponsor.
Could be a case where a new sponsor will only agree to sponsor it if it is to be held near the capital.

According to todays Irish times Carton House is a front runner. I thought the last two stagings there were pretty boring. I know its a great design
but it is not very easy on the eye in terms of TV coverage.
Would love to see it back in Portmarnock. You are gauranteed big galleries and it could well attract some big names in preparation for the Open.

Great shout, Portmarnock would be excellent, good course, good test and as you say, prep for the Open for some.

I read the article in the Irish Times and it really just felt like speculation on their part, almost as if they read this thread!!

Wasn't there a mention of Royal Dublin showing interest at one stage?

Was talking to Pat Ruddy Jr after it had been held in Baltray and they thought they had it that year. Would love to see it on a links course. Would the Links in Portmarnock be in the running.

Links doesn't have the room for big crowds/tented village etc.

I think Killarney has been a great host over the last two years, despite it not being a great spectator course the crowds turned up i their thousands.
One thing i noticed about Killarney was the lack of stands about the course. Think they only has one at the 1st tee and by the 18th green. Plus most of the holes have raised greens making it hard viewing also, so i think it's time to move to a more spectator friendly course.

I can only speak from courses that i've seen host the Irish Open but I'd pick Adare, Baltray or Portmarnock. With my preference being Portmarnock as i would love to see it being played on a links course again.

Think the top class pros would eat the Links for breakfast.
I dont think they have the room to move tees back too much.
They could grow the rough up ( like it was when it opened first and I lost 12 balls in one round !)but dont think they would want to do that
to protect their green fee revenue.

I know it's not a links course but I would love to see palmerstown house host the Irish open. Best parkland course in the east. Imo.

I have been told by a pretty solid source that the 2012 course will be either Carton House or Kileen Castle but that Kileen Castle is the more likely going to be the host after the Solheim cup success. Dont shoot the messsenger here. I personally think that with its new May slot that it needs to be a links course to attract a quality field.

Any word on a sponsor? any word on why Killarney wont be holding it?

Please not Carton. It was a disaster the coupl eof times it was there.

Carton is holding the European Amatuer so leave it with that and not the Open

Tournament is on in June, not May. Dont think Carton would be anxious to hold in May ever again after 05 and 06!

From what i've heard it's the new possible sponsor that wants it to be closer to the capital or else it's just the Euro thinking it will have a better chance to attract a new sponsor if it's nearer Dublin, not sure which one is true if any.

Apparently though there was a glitch in the European Tour website that released the schedule for next year by accident and it had the Irish Open Sponsored by Discover Ireland.
Hopefully though it will find a new sponsor quick as it won't be able to keep that new date without a good sponsor and a healthy prize fund.

Yep, I stand directed on the dates but not the venues. These are the 2 courses that I heard the tour are looking at and as I said , from what i hear Kileen is the more likely / preferred. That said , things have changed since 05 / 06 and maybe Carton house would be damn glad of the exposure and advertisment again.
Venue aint the main factor that makes players come . It could be on a 9 hole course and if the prize fund was good , they players would turn up. They need to up the money in 2012 to get a field.

This place is on the brink of ****ting down. THey recently had their gas turned off for not paying their gas bill!! I know coz I was there and the kitchen was only serving limited food as they said the gas "wasn't working". A friend of mine who works for their utility supplier told me they were cut off.

Would be a first time in Ireland (I think) for the same course to hold the ladies Irish open and Irish open in the same year? If Killeen got it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭golf_caddy

Will be played 3 weeks before the British would be nice to see it on a links... id have a sneaky one on the Royaler pitching for it ;)

Has there only been 12 Irish opens so far in the history of Irish golf?, strange!, one would have imagined there was more then just 12!.

According to Golf Central Daily, Irish Golf Desk etc on Twitter, it's going to Carton House.

Surely a links course with proper infrastructure makes most sense. Most European Tour events are played on parkland, proper placement on the calendar on a links could revive proper interest in the event again.

From the runmour mill it seems to be between Carton, Killeen Castle and Portmarnock. Of all of them Portmarnock would be my choice!

You will be happy to hear this weeks announcement so....;) Portmarnock looks like a certainty to host this years irish open, with Portrush taking over in 2013.

Great news, will be walking and having a few pints at it. (From Dart).

Don't know if they will let me in ;).

I think if the weather is good the winning score will be about -20. But looking forward to it - ye ha. Back in Dublin.

Here is a nice tip, get on early, won't be a great field - Lowry each way.

Indo pointing to Killeen Castle, RTE saying Carton to be announced today, rumblings from inside Portmarnock.

Wish they'd just announce the blasted thing! Might just call Paddy Power, they know everything before anyone else does!

I too hope it's Portmarnock but all the media reports seem to be saying Carton House is the likely venue. Announcement due today.

Crap decision. Last two opens at Carton were poorly attended

"I enjoyed Killarney as a venue," he went on. "The crowds were quite good but I didn't enjoy it as a golf course. It wasn't my favourite. It was a fun venue but I'd love to see it go back to the Dublin area."
