Just bought house, kitchen counter top a bit tired

We just bought a house and as you can imagine money is a little tight for the moment!
The kitchen is nice enough but starting to show its age. The cupboards are in ok condition but the counter top, which is chipboard with a laminate cover (dont know what the correct name is!), has burns and chips taken out of it.
Is it possible to replace just the counter top which i think could really refresh the kitchen overall appearance relatively cheaply if anyone will do it?

Who would we even approach about such a thing?, the Ikea's and B&Q's I suspect will want to sell us a whole new kitchen.

Any suggestions very much welcomed :) . The house is in Loughlinstown, Co Dublin.

You can just buy the worktop from either B&Q or Ikea, or any place that sells kitchens, get a price from an independent fitter to compare to the install cost from whever you do purchase

+1 for ikea, except their joining/edging pieces are different to what I am used to

also measure the existing lengths as there are different lengths and the shorter ones are easier to handle and cheaper.
the old one will provide the necessary templates for sink hob etc

also check existing thickness versus new one, especially if the slash back is tiled down to existing

Thanks guys, didn't realise you could just replace the counter, that's great news.
Now to start thinking about the sitting room... :)

Look at the topshape product. Modern square edge laminate.
