Hi all, I'm a newbie cyclist looking to buy a fairly basic entry level racing bike. I don't qualify for bike to work :( so I've been scouring the adverts and donedeal pages. I've found a 2009 Trek 1.5 that seems to be in good nick- can anyone suggest what I should be paying for it? I'm just very worried about getting fleeced. Thanks in advance, any suggestions/advice welcome!

Oh actually while I'm here- I'm female (name might give that away!) but 5'7" so could easily fit a small men's bike. Is there any specific reason that I should be looking for a ladies bike or is it just aesthetic differences?

my wife is as tall as you are and she rides a 50cm mens bike which fits fine. Personaly i think all ladies spec bikes are hideous and look like a dog taking a dump. Just look at the dolce by specialised. It looks afull!
The 2 things i recomend is a 40 cm handle bar straight away and a female specific saddle. If you can buy the bars from a shop rather than online they should fit them and the bar tape. The only reason you might need a womens spec is if your legs are long in comparison to your upper body.

Probably in the region of €550, maybe a bit more depending on the spec. as there were three different models according to Bikepedia.com - one of these a specific womens frame.
    Trek 1.5 C - compact chainset
    Trek 1.5 Triple
    Trek 1.5 WSD

If the colour isn't listed on this site for 2009, you may be buying a 2008 (or earlier) bike that was in a shop for a while but only sold in 2009. May be nothing wrong with this, just check out the detail. Oh, and at 5'7" make sure its not more than a 54cm frame, perhaps even 52cm, (or 50cm) might be better for you. Best get checked for size before you commit.

I won't pay anything close to €500, have a look at this, brand new for €735: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=57284
