hey dude, personally i would go with the m16 as it has a longer barrell length which offers more accuracy and rail space. but then being shorter the m4 allows more freedom of movement. but it all comes down to personal preference in the end. (also depends on what your budget is and what brand you get)

Have you played an airsoft game before? If not, book a rental package at a site first. Make sure you enjoy airsoft or you could go wasting your money on stuff you won't use again. It isn't a game for everyone.

Neither the M4 or the M16 is "better". We're out to have fun so get the gun you like the look of. If you can, head to a shop and try holding some of the guns, or ask a people at a site if you can have a shot with their gun. Most players are happy to help. You can always upgrade the performance of your gun later.

Depending on where you buy and what brand it is, you'll generally be looking at around €200-250 for a solid AEG.

Both South East Airsoft and Mid West Airsoft have a M16 in stock and both have several M4s also

If you're after a good M16, I would say you need to increase your budget almost two-fold. The M16 is not the most common, and as such the price tends to be a little more than that of the M4.

You can get a decent M4 for circa €180, but once again if you could stretch to the €250 mark you can get some seriously good performing gear that will outlast the cheaper variant.

As always, the best approach is to get yourself down to a store or site, or both, and pick them up and shoulder 'em

surely i could pick one up second hand much cheaper as my first gun is more then likely gunna get bumps and scrapes as all first time guns do

Oh, most definitely. I automatically assumed new. You should be able to pick up a decent second hand one for circa €180 :)

also if you do get an M4 you could always turn it into an M16 at a later date by swapping of the inner and outer barrels and then getting a new hand guard. you'd have to adjust the cylinder in your gearbox depending on if it's ported or not but im sure someone here can explain that later if you do decide.
as for brands, first time AEG G&G raider. they're all over adverts. light and good performer. so brands to look out for G&G, G&P, TM, ARES (depending on gun). I'd personally try avoid the china guns although some of them are great performers like the JG AUG, it looses performance extremely fast. some china guns are A&K, JG, galaxy. I've missed alot of both the good brands and not so good ones but you get the drift :)

The cheapest m16 around is the jing gong its just a chinese clone brand but there gear isn't too bad.

hmm depends on what m4 you're going to use as a base. say 200 for the base, 70-100 for 12" rail system, new inner barrel and outer barrel, 40-50 for inner adn no idea for outer. then if you don't have a non ported cylinder you're going to need one if the barrel goes over 500mm. a cylinder would probably be about 20euro and fitting it will be 30 I'd say as that seems to be flat rate which retailers charge for internal work.. so i dunno maybe 400ish, but work it out, they're just rough estimates though and also part depending.

Just get a G&G Raider. Done.
