Laptop monitor switches off after 'starting windows' screen (windows 7 ultimate)

Not sure if this is in the right forum, but I suspect that the problem may be due to a virus/malware because I've discovered that my portable hard drive which spends most of its time plugged into said laptop was infected.

So... My laptop (Asus X5DC) screen consistently turns off at start up, after the 'starting windows' screen. This problem started a while back, and at the time I was too overloaded with work to diagnose so I just connected to an external monitor and it worked fine, so carried on that way. I can't remember any triggers that may have caused the problem, but as I said it was a while back, so can't be confident in that one.

Tried second function keys to switch back on, uneffective. When I boot in safe mode the screen stays on. I've scanned with Microsoft security essentials, found nothing. Could be graphics card problem or simple setting, but I don't really know how to explore those routes.

    Any ideas? :)
