It depends on the county in question AFAIK but most offices will accept a letter from a legitimate source like your boss..

Dont know about Tipp but you should be ok. It could depend on who you meet at the counter. Your better off going into the tax office in person as opposed to posting it.

You don't need a VAT no. for comm. tax. You may need your PPS no. when you submit you declaration.

been asked for my Vat no, garda declaration, every time I tax a new(to me)van since the new(ly enforced)rules came in(kildare). If the missus goes to tax a new yoke for me she gets a lot of grief(I run 5 vans for work and change them a lot) and has to blag it a bit to walk away with a crisp disc. Couple of the lads who work as subbies for me have had to change to private tax(on berlingo type vans) as they had no Vat no. I doubt if a letter form me would have made any diff. Good luck with it. I dont get the whole "make getting a tax disc hard" thing - they should sell them in the local sweet shop so that more people would have them=more money for a govt that needs every penny. In the UK its a post office job and no hassle. Here it is like winning a minor lottery to actually manage to walk away having given the feckers money and gotten a disc.

Anyone else think that a "Tax disc" should be just an item you could buy like phone credit = no paperwork required? Have three major classes - Car, Van, HGV, set a flat rate for each, and sell the disc everywhere?? Almost everyone would get one, you would save a fortune in admin, and the Gardai's task of enforcement would be greatly simplified. No disc, no drive-a fine on the spot of twice the tax rate for not having one? Basically, its a revenue raising scheme as it stands, so why make it hard to get????

PPS number in place of VAT number?
Just bringing this one back from yesteryear as I was told by a mate who works as a carpenter that he intends to use his PPS number to sign up for van road tax... I cat see him getting away with it will he?
