Single parent supports in UK

First, please don't let any troll turn this into a debate on their own obsessions. I'm asking this question for a story I'm writing, and am looking for plain and factual answers.

I understand that while the single parent payment in the UK is lower than in Ireland, there are other supports - totally free medical treatment through NHS, free schoolbooks and schooling, subsidised school dinners, after-school homework clubs, total rent support, utility bill support, etc - that are available in Britain and supports the basic payment.

Could people living in Britain be so kind as to list these supports for me?

Your best bet is probably to do some checking on http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/index.htm specifically the section on Money, Tax and Benefits.

What a hideous site [shudder]. Thanks for the pointer, though.

It's a government site, that it must be hideous is probably the first stipulation on the development contract :D
