You dont need to go to an authorised dealer even when still under manufacturer warranty.
You could price the merc dealer as they may have reasonable fixed price servicing. The added benefit of keeping a main dealer history (if you currently have main dealer history) is that there can sometimes be goodwill repairs on known defects even when a car is many years old. A history with mercedes dealer is required for these.
If mercedes were within 10 to 15% of an independant garage, it would be worth going to mercedes. Also you need to compare like with like, as in - price mercedes versus indy garage who are using genuine parts and correct oils etc.

No need to go to a main dealer but I would! Is a service a or b due?
Tom Murphy does the A for €179 and B for €350 on an 03-08 E-Class which is actually very reasonable I imagine Dublin dealers would have similar offers.
A 3 year old Mercedes isn't what I'd consider Indy fodder yet.

If it's a CL63 AMG I'd bring it to a main dealer. An A150 I'd chance an indie;)

I'd agree with the cl63 comment alright!
But just as an aside if a main dealer can do a routine oil and filter change with genuine parts for €179 why wouldn't you! An Indy might be I don't know €160 what's €19 on an 08 merc! oil itself isn't cheap and especially not the good stuff.
Getting a turbo changed or anything seriously labour intensive is an Indy job IMO

I know the OP is in Dublin but Michael Moore Athlone advertised a while ago in the local paper (Westmeath Independent) with fixed-price A+B Mercedes services, that was the first time I had seen menu servicing from an approved service centre since MSL closed the Merc. service unit in Europa Motors Blackrock.

On the modern Mercedes you need to check your manual carefully to see exactly what you need a quote on. The A+B services are the standard time/mileage dependant services but in additions to those there is C,D,E etc etc which are items like brake fluid change, pollen filters, and various other items/checks so you need to work out what your car is due or find a competent garage who can check it for you and quote accordingly.

IMO €179 for a straight forward A service(oil and filter, vehicle inspection, diagnostic check) is very expensive, even using the correct oil.

IMO(biased of course) but a decent reputable indy will give you every bit as good a service as a main dealer, but you need to be sure they have decent electronic diagnostics for resetting intervals and properly reading/measuring the oil level.

I used to get services at Terry Ryan Cars in Foxrock. They are an MB indy (or at least used to be).

we used 10 w 40 and it was just the cheap stuff out of the motor factors.the offer is just to get cars in and hopefully get extras of them.

i wouldnt use that stuff when i am working at home i generally give the option and obviously more expensive for the mobil

Just because your place was servicing cars poorly doesn't mean every one is.

i am not saying they are.just my experience with them special offer services having worked in numerous garages

we did not service cars poorly if you paid the price of a normal plan a or b you got it to manufacturers spec
