Why do men congregate in pubs but rarely women?

Briefly flirted with my local modern pub last evening. As I counted the numbers (yes how bored was I?:)) it struck me that there was about 15 men and just 1 lady. Struck me how most of the men were in groups, either at tables or hugging the counter. This is the normal pattern. Groups of women are rare. Just wondering why that was the case?. Is it fairly typical of Ireland,it is isn't it?.

Cafe's,admittedly earlier tend to be majority female, frequently with kids, but there men were mostly middle aged, unlikely there'd be little ones at home with the wives.
