    Driving to work this morning.

Engine Workshop message, with flashing glow plug.

After work no messages but significantly impaired performance.

Read code with generic reader and got P2563.

Anybody care to point me in the right direction for what it might be?

Think it is something to with variable nozzle turbo control but not sure what is most likely cause.

    thanks,

    thanks,

    richardsheil

Get someone with vcds to run a forced regen on this and see if the code can be cleared.
There may also be a software update applicable to this model affecting the normal regen. cycle

Thanks- that's useful info. Will look at car later. At work right now.

This is brilliant info to have.

    Much appreciated.

    crosshair1's document told me to:

1:check vacuum piping to turbo actuator and to secondary egr valve
    2:check software rev
3: ensure stud for clamping actuator was still present and undamaged
4: check if vacuum actuator was leaking.

It took me a little while to do that. I decided (for now) that if the car had done 63000 miles with no problem in this area it was unlikely to be the software. I checked the piping and stud and they are perfect.
Tonight in work I got one of the vacuum testers that we use for calibrations. The actuator would not allow me to create any vacuum at all.

Conclusion: time to change the vacuum actuator for the variable nozzle turbo.

The document crosshair1 sent tells to change it according to 2lturbo charger, turbo charger, change vacuum unit with position sender for vacuum adjustment unit- G581.

Does anybody have access to that instruction please?

The part is No2 in the attached diagram.

I am thinking to get somebody to remove the turbo, then I would set up the new unit, then get the guy to replace the turbo.

Unless it would be cheaper or better to get a new turbo?

All advice would be gratefully received.

    Thanks,

    Richard

Agnew's in Boucher Road have new actuator 03l198716a for 84 sterling plus vat (€121) compared to €157 + vat here= €189.

It's variable vane, not variable nozzle. I changed one of those g581 units a couple of months ago. Not a bad job, about 2 hours, but you need a VAS to set it up properly. You also need a specific type of spanner to assemble it, either that or you could modify an ordinary one. If you give me your vin I may be able to get a copy of the instructions.

Thanks. I have dropped the car in to a garage for this. Many thanks for the offer.

Had the garage change the vacuum actuator for the turbo on Monday.

Car is now transformed and I think it is running better than it has done since I bought it in October.

Easily diagnosed now that I know how. If you suck on the vacuum pipe to the actuator and get little or no resistance then the actuator is goosed.

I got mine from Agnew's in Belfast for €141 including postage.

Thanks to crosshair1 for the instructions from VW.

Hi guys just after reading this post I have the same issue with my passat is it alright to drive the car until I replace the actuator.

Yes just be careful as the lack of power can catch you out when pulling out of junctions etc.

However if you continue to drive the car with the fault then the DPF won't be able to regenerate which will lead to further hassle and expense so you should get the existing issue sorted as soon as possible to avoid this.
