    Hi,
Ignition gone (I think) on 07 Passat - I need to tow it to the garage but cannot release the automatic handbrake - the battery is good, all electrics working, but no lights on dash and when I insert key fob nothing happens (no pre heater lights etc) - any suggestions on releasing the handbrake ? Have tried disconnecting battery and discharging (joining the battery cables) but no joy that way either. Cannot use diag. either as will only work with ignition on.

    Thanks in advance

You wont be able to release the steering lock either.

You can remove the motors and manually wind them back (t40 torx i think)
or you can power the motors (use a 10a inline fuse)

Can the garage that your bringing it to not advise you on this?

Without getting power to the system you won't be able to release them afaik.

The simplest thing to do for any garage is to just put the rear wheels on dollies when moving the car for repairs.

What a load of boll... of a system. What genius added an electronic handbrake to a car... I have a friend and he has had several problems with his. What was wrong with pulling the auld handbrake

Did you try the other key?

Thanks for all the replies - ended up having to put them on dollies to move it. The other key behaved the same way - could release the steering lock OK - when the key fob is in you can hear the electronic 'click' as you press it in and all electronics seem to be working OK - but no dash lights & could not release the brake. Anyway - thanks again - just have to wait on the bad news from the garage now :( Its due for a NCT tomorrow as well which might be unlikely.
