My wife and i are new to the world of Wii/xbox and are considering getting the Wii system for our 4 and 7 year old kids on the basis that it is, i'm told, easier to use and more geared towards kids of that age. I was wondering what games would be suitable for kids of that age to play on together and on their own and what games they would enjoy playing with us. They both love thier DS's but no matter what games we buy they keep gravitating back to the Super Mario games. I will probably get them a super mario game of some description but would like advice on other alternatives.

There's Super Mario Galaxy (and it's sequel) which are the main Mario games on it. but may end up being a tad hard for them...

I'd say get New Super Mario Bros Wii (it's multiplayer so you could join in) and Mario Kart Wii.

Kirby's Adventure Wii is a similar setup to the New Super Mario Bros game but with the Kirby character as well. I've enjoyed what i played of it a lot :) might be worth looking into.
    Just Dance 3 also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNjTaP5jmQI
And maybe Go Vacation, it's got a collection of 50 different mini-games, an explorable island and more :)

All the above should be multi-player.

You can get the rabbids games relatively cheaply, they're supposed to be decent enough for what they are (minigame collections) and the rabbids themselves are the sort of jabbering psychotics that kids adore. There's a collection that has the first 3 games in one pack that pops up regularly in online sales.

Can't go wrong with Mariokart. I've a 2 year old who is happy to drive into a wall over and over again, I've seen older kids (5 and 7 I think) happily redshelling the crap out of eachother. Alas, my wife and I fight like cat and dog when we're playing it but that's just because I'm so much better at it than her :) <ducks> There are other kart games - the Sega one and a Dreamworks one for example, but I haven't heard any good reports about either.

Boom Blox. Anyone who can hold a Wiimote can play it. And anyone who can let go of a Wiimote can break your telly playing it. Flinging blox at the screen is maddeningly addictive. My daughter doesn't like it when I deliberately hit the animals but hey, that just means I'm bringing her up right, while at the same time not pretending that the world isn't a needlessly cruel place... Again, it's cheap - I got the 2nd one for about 7 quid new.

Wii Sports Resort (which may have come free with the Wii depending on which package you got). Say what you like about it, it's worth it for the balloon-sword fights alone. Mostly restful gentle fun waterskiing and frisbee throwing, except for the occasional Kill-Bill-esque showdowns :)

Similarly, WiiFit has a number of games that kids love - the hula hoop and the ski jump especially. Bit expensive though, unless mammy intends to use it.

A Boy and His Blob and De Blob are supposed to be quite good too, haven't played 'em though.

Don't buy Beach Sports. It's awful. No matter what you pay for it, it's too much. I'll give you a copy for free if you want, you'll still feel like I ripped you off. In fact, almost anything with Wii or Sports in the title that isn't a first-party Nintendo game is probably going to be a waste of time.

Always ... Mario Kart. My daughter is 5 (just turned) and has been playing this since she was 3. She can beat all the 50cc cups so no worries with it being too tricky.

Also, she likes the Mario & Sonic Olympic games and also Super Mario Galaxy (a bit trickier) and the Super Mario Bros (even the classic collection).
