How educated are you?

A while back I started a thread about your view of people who settle for low paid jobs. Although alot of the backlash was a little misguided, it got me wondering how educated boardsies are. I was of the assumption, with the Celtic Tiger, the majority would be college educated or in the process.

    How educated are you?

Just seen your poll, how come you are basing the poll around the assumption that you can only recieve and education from third level +??? So if you dont have a cert, you are not educated?? Bit of an ignorant assumption IMO.

Have a Diploma in Business Studies. Did it part time back in 97-99. Started an evening degree a few years back but never finished. If I were to go back to college it would have to be full time.

I have an MSc, but I wouldn't take that to mean very much.

In some of the most well respected academic institutions in these islands, a Masters degree is something that can be purchased.

Not that I'm saying Trinity is a particularly well respected institution

I left school after 4 years in secondary and joined the army at 17, so I guess 'not' is the answer.

    I can shoot straight, though...

To say Trinity sells masters is a bit disingenuous of you. The Trinity MA is the same as the Oxbridge MA, and is a tradition based and is for voting rights. No one in their right mind would put it on their CV... You would be found out at even a cursory background check even if you were not aware of it.

    I have twelfty medumications.

Seriously tho, I hold a degree and since I've been in a full time job, I've done some night courses. Completed a two year Fetac course in Sound Engineering this year. Next I'd like to do Horticulture or something about growing your own veg. Its a good way to keep yourself motivated if your job is a tad boring or unchallenging. Great way to meet people too.

To say it is the same as the Oxford MA is quite a leap, given the difference in the rankings, but I don't dispute that it is tradition based. However, those who have been conferred with the MA degree from Dublin can say they hold an MA from TCD, will have had to have paid for it, will not have had to have worked for it, and the existence of such a degree will be confirmed by the University.
    and is for voting rights.
    Hilarious.

What's wrong with a voting card?

My BA is from TCD and in fairness it was a four year degree.

    Studied for a masters elsewhere.

As I said, I dont know how to edit the poll. Also, some college equates to 'not'.

Could you clarify? Do you mean that unless someone has a piece of paper saying they went to college they are not educated? You do realise a LC is still an education. Also an aunt of mine never went to secondary school and she educates herself all the time. The woman reads everything! And I don't mean chick lit, she reads about history, science, medicine, etc.

Pretty much the same as myself. Except for the 'Sc' bit, and the 'relationship' bit....she had the decency to dump me before I started the Ph.D. She must've thought she'd distract me from my studies. How thoughtful of her.

Some people however still do see it as an advantage in initial CV screening.

TBH it's an anachronism that has no place in a modern university.

    Degree
    Starting MSc in Jan
Maybe PhD or maybe not afterwards
