    "Others on request"

There are not many poor bookmakers;)

What did he achieve this year to warrant being one of the contenders?

why's trap there, he become Irish all of a sudden:confused:

also ditto McIlroy & Clarke (and prob some others)... so could they win both the Irish and Brit ones then?

    Where's Roche?

I bet his DS was saying exactly that on most of the mountain stages of the TDF!

Supposed Trap could win just like AP McCoy won the British equivalent last year.

If you really want to go down the "is McIlroy Irish?" path:

Does this not qualify him for Sports Writer of the Year?;)

With Nicolas Roche's book flying off the shelves and being Irish sports book of the year, how come he ain't even listed as a possible winner?

    http://www.paddypower.com/bet/novelty-betting/sports-novelties/rte-sports-personality

I love cycling and hate soccer but I'd vote for Trap over Roche any day. Roches is immensely unlike-able and hasn't really achieved anything.

The term "Sports Personality" is deliberately vague but giving this to Roche would be stretching it to its very limits.

There is a tendency for those involved in a particular sport to get behind "their man" (or woman). The horseracing world campaigned hard for McCoy over a number of seasons. But AP had given them plenty of ammunition and the tipping point was when he picked up the couple of major races that had previously eluded him. I would wholeheartedly support a campaign for a cyclist to get one of these honours (and I believe Cav deserves the BBC one this year) but I'd be struggling to write a campaign manifesto based on Roche's 2011 season.

My sense of balance in reviewing the 2011 sporting year may be a bit off given that my recollection of it is:

"something, something, something, Leinster, something, something, THE DUBS, something, something".

Hilarious thread... It's not even Friday!!

Roche for sports personality... You need to great at sport & you need to have a personality too!! ;-)

Only messing, he seems like a good lad just poor direction innhis career.

Definitely not a winner or even runner.

Only one person in my opinion- Katie Taylor. Phenomenal athlete.

What exactly has Roche done this year to deserve a nomination?

I liked Roche's book but God bless him he's not a contender for any "personality of the year" competition.

+1 for Katie Taylor. Awesome athlete...

Katie Taylor supporters may hold off till next year when she might have had a good run at the Olympics.
In rugby the Leinster team were hugely impressive winning the Heineken Cup and O'Brien and Sexton were stand-out stars. Maybe there's a World Cup hangover that might work against them, but they were good there too.
Richie Dunne's performance in Russia was awesome. I hope Robbie Keane's karaoke exploits keep him distracted from making an attempt at this prize. Trap is interesting, but just because we have managed to squeeze out of our qualification series doesn't mean we have suddenly started playing any better football. It's still painful to watch. Being in the Euro Championships will make it a little easier to bear, however.
Kilkenny have an array of hurling automatons who could be given a gong any year when other sports are quite.
The Dubs won, but their winning captain, Cluxton, is kind of an anti-personality.
We all keep close track of Roche's exploits, but even with his higher profile generally now he will need a some big marquee name results to get this award.
In summary.... I dunno who to give it to.......!

Cullen was captain actually but is not a contender for the gong. Alan Brogan was Footballer of the Year but not in the kind of stand-out way that would be required to win this.
