Temporary Traffic Lights

Hey, I came across a situation today which I am unsure about thought here would be as good a place as any to ask!

Basically there are road works near my local test centre with temporary traffic lights at a T junction, the lights are only facing the main road and there are no lights for cars coming on to it so they just go when lights are red for main road.

When I was driving along the main road the lights went red and I stopped.
There were no cars coming onto the road and a guy in a luminous jacket who is directing the traffic(not a Guard or anything just a builder I think) waved me to go through so I did.

I presume in the test though I'd be best to stay put until the lights go green even if i'm waved through again?
    Thanks

Hi OP, you should still treat temporary traffic lights as the normal traffic lights in town. The fact its facing the the main road traffic will need to comply with those lights, though those coming off the road still should use the traffic lights if they can see it. Those on the main road have right of way I think compared to traffic coming off a minor road onto the major main road. So if traffic on the main road stops ye might be able to go, if traffic is moving ye would need to stop for that traffic regardless. Traffic coming from the right on the main road will always have right of way.

I think if the road traffic person with the stop/go sign waved you off to go, you don't have to comply with the lights comply with their sign and when they wave you off that's when in general driving.

In the test, it be hard to know what to do. I think stop if its not clear from the right, if clear from the left you might move off. Comply with the what the road traffic person is doing whether they have a stop/go sign and wave you off since there are no lights on that road.
