2008 car tax query??

    I have a buddy that bought a 2008 Focus 1.4 Zetec.
He bought it June this year, prior to this the car belonged to a disabled driver so was exempt from tax. When he bought it he asked the sales guy in the main ford dealers where he bought it about the tax being high on a '08 car as it was classed under the CC rate. The reply he got was "That's the way it is because it was registered before June '08"
Am I correct that he can get this changed to the emmisions tax rate as this would be lower for him?

If so can somebody detail for me how he should go about this?
He rang the Vehicle registration office when he got the tax book in June and they said it was correct as it is.

    Cheers

cc based motor tax on the 1.4 Focus is €333 currently. C02 motor tax on the 1.4 Focus is €447 or Band D, the 1.4 was not a low emissions engine. Ford regisitered a load of these cars before 1st July 2008 because they knew very few would buy them after then, they were deleted from the range here in early 2009.

A 2008 1.4 focus petrol may well be cheaper on the old system than on emissions based system.

Old system would cost €333 based on it being under 1400cc.

It appears 08 1.4 focus has emissions of 157g co2. that would put it at €430 approx if taxed on new system. Typically the government automatically put early 08 cars onto the cheapest system once July 08 came around. You would need to check emissions of the actual car but I would say this is pretty correct and the car is currently on the cheaper system for that car - the old system.
Being bought before July 08 would have nothing to do with it not going on the new system.

    Edit: as bazz stated

Possibly I got it mixed up as he says he will now be paying €483 after the budget rise.
Can he get this changed to the CC system then or is he stuck with it?

If reg'd before the 1st july it should be CC rate.

They gave cars from 1st Jan to 30th June the cheaper rate, CC or CO2 based.

It very well may be taxed on emissions If there's a change of tax class, ie going from being exempt to normal tax.

    Check with tax office,

He did check with the tax office but they said it was correct.
But I thought you could get it changed if you wish?

At the time of first registering in 2008 the owner could decide which way they wanted to tax the car. But not now, over 3 years later. Before buying he should have checked the tax status to ensure he was happy to be paying it.

But he only has the car since June this year. It was originally a Disabled drivers car so would have been tax exempt. Would it not be a decision for this year as it is returning to normal car?

Even tho he only has the car since June, I still think it's whatever is down on the VLC & the date when it was first registered. But maybe writing to the tax office outlining the case then maybe they will review it.

Its nothing to do with the VLC. The emissions are stated on the VLC regardless of which system its on. We had 2 cars bought in april 08. Both changed to cheaper system on first taxing after july 08. VLC did not need adjusting in any way.

If the car is not now on the cheaper of the 2 options its worth looking into. I have a feeling it is on the cheaper old system which is €358 after the latest budget changes. The emission rate would be €481.

Does he have a primary medical certificate?
If so then he is entitled to it and more
