I'll ring Aer Lingus tomorrow but just in case anyone out there's done similar.

We're booked for NY after xmas. Booked in October. No insurance.
Looks like we may not be able to travel because of illness.

    Cancelling
I know we'll get practically nothing back on the flights but anyone know if we'll
    get much on the hotels?
    Changing to sometime next year
I know we pay a change fee but anyone know penalties re hotel....

I know I'll be educated tomorrow but if anyone knows I'd appreciate the info.

    Thanks.

It really depends on the terms and conditions of the hotel you booked. Some may not offer any refund, some let you cancel up to the morning of check in. Some may offer a part refund. Some may allow you change the date of booking

It should be in the confirmation of booking email you would have got if you booked online.

If the hotel's terms and conditions do not allow for cancellation, it may still be worth your while contacting them to explain your circumstances. They may show some flexibility about a later booking, or be willing to offer a partial refund.

It would be worse if you took ill in the USA, as medical costs there are enormous. Travel insurance is highly advisable for anyone going to America.

Thank you both for the replies. Just to let anyone else know down the road.

Just off phone....sort of ish good news re changing our dates...€200 per person to change the flights + add on then whatever the flight difference would be.
Complete refund on hotel until the day before we're due to arrive.

    Thanks again.
