Any recommendations for a place to stay in Paris, looking at around February/January?

if you want something cheap and cheerful, then I recommend Hostel Bastile.
i got a private room at quite a good rate.

Nice area, close to metro and tourist links, also near to Hotel le' Sully too if i remember correctly!

Stayed at Hotel Champlain last Easter, it's near Rome Metro station, nice and clean and not too dear. Easy access to all places in the city.

There is no off season in Paris really. Its the ultimate tourist trap all year round, and thats not taking anything away from the place. The city shamelessley markets itself as the centre of the universe. And those living within the confines La Perif like to regard themselves as Gods. Maybe they're right.

August is traditionally the month when France rests and closes down while everyone goes on holiday, but this is no longer the case in large towns and cities. (Unless there is a strike on).

I lived in Paris for 2 years and go back about 3 times a year. I love and hate the place with a passion and dispassionate aloofness.

I can't relly help with hotel advice as I seldom stay in them when I'm there. (I do know that all hotel rooms in Paris are tiny though).

But I'm happy to answer any other questions about the place as best I can.

Have stayed and recommended this place to two sets of people who really liked it as well. Keep an eye on their internet rates to get a lower price.

Situated near the Luxembourg gardens and right across from the Pantheon so try and get a room with a view. Taxi fare from Ryanair bus stop was around €15 a couple of years ago. Have stayed in other parts of Paris but much preferred this spot.

Here are a few great 4-star hotels in some great locations:

Hotel Residence Des Arts and Hotel Villa D'Estrees, near Saint-Germain, Latin Quarter -

    http://www.villadestrees.com/
Hotel Bellechasse, very 'design' near Orsay Museum - http://lebellechasse.com/
Hotel Athenee, near Madeleine and Opera - http://www.hotel-athenee.com
Hotel Des Champs Elysees and Hotel Chateau Frontenac, near Champs Elysees, Golden Triangle -

My suggestion is first formulate an idea where you want to stay within Paris, and then search according to the location.

Obviously everyone has their own tastes, so it depends what you're looking for. Ile-St-Louis is my favourite part to stay in.

If you like exploring sights/neighbourhoods on foot maybe try some of these and bring your camera:

You give them a tip of between 5 and 20E
    Need to book them

    http://paris-walks.com/
    Cost around 12E per walk
Most I think you can just turn up for but some you have to book.

Alternatively you could do the hop on/hop bus tours. You can pick them up around Notre Dame, and/or you could go on a Bateau Mouche and take great photos from the water.
Pick up a map from a tourist office.

Galleries won't be too full at this time of year so a good time to go. ParisWalks does a guided tour of the impressionists in Musee d'Orsay which requires booking.

    Or maybe visit the catacombs?

(Am going myself next week so have this research to hand!)
