    Hi All;

    I am hoping to cycle to and from work in Feb, travelling from Lucan to Eastpoint, Clontarf (14 miles as i run it sometimes).

    I am quiet fit as do alot of running and a few marathons etc.

    So wondering what kind of bike be best for this and ideas how long this journey could take? Approx?

    Thks

    I'd say if you're reasonably fit you'd do about 15-17mph on a road bike with narrow wheels.

    These guys are Dublin-based. Ideal urban transport and delivered to your door for €379. You're stuck with a single gear but this means there's a lot less to go wrong...and sure there are no real hills to speak of between Lucan and East Point.

    I never commuted by bike when I was living in Lucan and commuting to East Point - that was during my fat boy days - but my 25km commute when I lived Down Under used to take me 40-55mins depending on wind and energy levels.

    From Eastpoint to Lucan its all hill, from Chapelizord to Hermitage Clinic.

    Almost any hybrid or racer will do, even a MTB with slicks.

    It really depends on your budget, what sort of bikes you like, what else you'll be using the bike for and what sort of level of practicality you're after (mudguards, rack, etc).

    I wouldn't get a fixie or single speed as your first bike.

    Oh please...I live in Cork now...Chapelizod up to Palmerstown is not a hill. :)

    You can get a decent entry level racing bike with room for mudguards and rack for 500-600e or a relatively nice hybrid for probably slightly less money provided you're ok with flat bars.
    If you want to spend more than 500-600 you could look at fancier audax-orientated race bikes or full on race bikes if you're willing to sacrifice the ability to easily mount mudguards and racks. Cyclo-cross bikes and tourers are also decent options for commuting relatively long distance but again they tend to be pricey.

    If you're on a budget get simplest hybrid you can find (no suspension, don't worry about getting disc brakes) or something second hand.

    Whatever you do, bear in mind that you'll probably have to budget for a decent U-lock, lights and maybe a rack and panniers.
