never done it, a clubmate has and says it's good. I'll need the extra time (instead of doing Rotterdam) to get myself in shape after this month's socialising

New Jersey - are you a local ? Good chance I'll be down there as I think Mrs P will be running it again. I did it two years ago when it was still a two loop course. Do you know the area at all ? If not I'd strongly suggest trying to get a place close to the start as the shuttle bus situation can be a bit messy and the streets close to traffic pretty early.

Little hard to say ! They have changed the course since I ran it and the website is confusing. The map given by "View course" http://www.njmarathon.org/assets/1/Page/2012_njmcoursemapv2.pdf shows a point-to-point course while the elevation profile map http://www.njmarathon.org/events/new_jersey_marathon.aspx shows and talks about a 1-loop course. One place it says the start time is 8am, elsewhere it TBD !

I will say this - if the start is by the water then try to stay near the start. Each year the shuttle bus situation can be a problem and it is very difficult to drive and park anywhere near the start. If they are starting the race by the race course (which would make sense to avoid the need to move people around) then ignore this, but check it out as it might be useful to have a car. A few people I know ran it this year so I'll see they know the story.

The course is flat ... other than a few bridges ... .

The big factor is weather - the course is very exposed and the start at 8am is pretty late. The race has a history of getting hit by wet or hot weather. The year I ran it the start was 9am and about 1/4 of the field failed to finish as the temps hit the high 80Fs with mid 80% humidity by 11am. The previous year a storm rolled in off the ocean when the race started ! So be prepared for anything - there is no shelter/shade on the course. Wind off the ocean can also be a factor.

At sub3 you are not going to have problems with crowding - in fact you may find it a bit lonely ! There is great support as you pass through each town ... folks will bring their beach chairs and coolers out to the sidewalk (and hoses/sprinklers too if it hot). Other parts will be pretty empty and while the seafront is scenic much of the rest can be a bit dull if you need distraction.

Get the weather and this is a good place to target a sub-3.

thanks for great reply, im not going to be dissappointed about the dull view you describe, only out for onething, sub 3!
really looking forward to this. do u know of any hotel in particular that you'd recommend.

    Also worth reading :

(Looks like the half has got more popular ...)

Depends on where the start is.

If the start is where has been - i.e by the ocean then I'd suggest staying near the waterfront withing walking distance of the start and avoid the hassle of shuttle buses etc. Unfortunately anything close is likely to be pricey. I stayed at the Bungalow Hotel ... it was "ok", but not really runner friendly, (I had my own food etc.).

If the start is by race track then I am not sure. If this is a vacation (and you have OH and/or kids with you ) you would probably still want a place by the beach and would then have to figure out how to reach the start point.

This being the US public transport is limited.

I'll ask someone who was there last year but an email to the organizer would be your best bet to get an answer (possible it is not determined yet).

i've checked out the hotels that they recommend on the website , the cheapest is $174 a night, too pricey as i'll be staying a week and there a few miles from the start also.
emailed the organisers as your suggestion. thanks

You could just stay there the night before ....and try elsewhere for the rest of the week ?
