    good morning boarders.ie

    could anyone please be of assistance and provide me with a list of goods which will be affected by the increase in the standard VAT rate as of January 1, 2012. (am I right in thinking the increase only applies from then or are some goods already up in price from today?)

    My plan is to stock up on all these products before their price goes up (presuming that retailers will pass on VAT increase).

    Many thanks to all.

    Practically everything will have the new 2% increase applied, but it may or may not be passed on by retailers. M&S have already said they won't pass it on. The VAT increase does not apply until January.

    The list you're looking for is impossible for anyone to supply, and would be absolutely enormous anyway.

    Stop worrying over nothing. 2% isn't going to be noticeable in the long run.

    No, it's not impossible. There must be an official list provided by revenue.ie, I just can't locate it online; Any helpful souls out there ???

    I don't agree that the hike will not be noticeable;

    any goods that considered 'discretionary' items.

    Food, for example, is a necessity item.

    A tin of paint from your local hardware store is a discretionary item.
    A car is a discretionary item

    The list is HUGE, but in terms of what you see when you walk into a shop, if its a food item, you are ok, anything else there's a good chance it will be affected.

    You want an itemised list of every item thats subject to standard rate vat? Thats a looooooooooooong list, man! Practically everything except basic foodstuffs, books, childrens clothes, & services except phones. As jorel says, its not something you can actually list. Its too huge.

    or you can always drive up to the north and buy goods there. its always cheaper up north. i found recently that JUNCTION1 in co.antrim is far cheaper and better than the outlet in banbridge. far more brands and more discounts. believe me its worth the trip. plus theres an asda right in front of the retail park. size wise its as big as liffey valley retail park . the outlet is so small compared to junction 1. also there is a holiday inn express right beside the shopping centre which is also very cheap if you plan to go shopping for christmas or anytime. if our government doesnt care for us then why should we care about them ? go north is what i say.

    There you go. Spend hours doing your list of goods that may now cost 2% extra. have fun

    i do - I've plenty of space! I also plan to buy stuff from abroad as I will be travelling regularly to other EU countries where goods have a lower rate of VAT!

    Thank you very much!!! Given I don't consume much, looks like I'll have very little stocking up to do. Other than then items I consume for business purposes, I am only concerned by 9 of the items above. Not bad, eh? :-) Fortunately I am self employed so can deduct stationery and computer expenses from my taxes. Most of my budget goes on fresh fruit and veg, fresh fish, meat and rice. All unpackaged of course!

    Anyone happen to know what VAT rate applies to vinegar and baking soda?
