Shocking selection though, hardly any current designs. I'd to go to Cloggs.eu to get any of the ones I spotted in store online.

8/12/11 EDIT: below in normal unbold text was my original post. Since then converse UK confirmed this place is the Irish distributor, apologies for worrying anybody.

The site looks a bit basic for such a big international firm. Maybe its a legit agent but I would be careful.

Looking on converse.com they have a international list and that site is not listed.

    https://www.converse.com/Help/OrdersShippingAndReturns/InternationalCustomers.aspx

When you click on the "about us" bit in the OP's link it says...
    About Us.

You need know nothing. The truth is out there.

Looks dodge to be honest, compared to the converse.com site anyway... And the copy on the main page is amateur at best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭A Disgrace

And if you try to pay it links to a paypal accout. Has to be fake?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

It is not a guarantee of being fake, just more likely not an official site. Converse are a basic shoe and very easy to fake, and could be hard to tell if they are fakes.

So I am not saying they are fake but I would be almost certain it is not owned by converse themselves, it has an individuals name listed. So if it is an individual retailer the VERY strange thing is that they list other retailers in around the country.
    http://www.converse.ie/findRetailer.aspx

having phone numbers of competitors on your site makes no sense to me, and makes it appear more like it is posing as an official site.

There is also a link to an ebay store, username converseshoesman

toolhaus shows some neg feedback but no claims of fakes.
    http://toolhaus.org/cgi-bin/negs?User=converseshoesman&Dirn=Received+by&ref=home

but fakes are hard to determine.

Lots of feedback on ebay and some quite low selling prices for converse...

    http://feedback.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=AllFeedback&userid=converseshoesman&iid=-1&de=off&interval=0&items=200

as he says himself, the truth is out there....

+1 on that, I've bought runners from them before, and can confirm there real, I don't think meteor would advertise a fake site?

if you log in http://meteorgoodies.ie/login their you can see meteor advertise them! and have a discount code for them too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,498 ✭✭✭✭cson

Meteor have this as part of their discount offers to customers. Bad and all as they are, I highly doubt they'd link you to a scam site.

€40 for the standard style is 50c better than Schuh [student discount!] for me so meh, I'll pay the 50c to have them right away.

    ****e webbie tbh.

I'm on the hunt for converse for my daughter and came across this site, seems so crappy, but as said above it lists authorised retailers which made me think it
might be real. They don't have the ones I want, the only place that does is foot locker and they're not listed as a retailer! All very confusing!

Edit: if you actually go to the help page it gives you their about info; address, phone numbers etc,

I took a chance on it and bought a kids pair. So while I'm no Converse expert I will report back when I get them with my opinion as to whether they are real or not.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

There are site on how to spot fakes. Not sure how accurate they are, since their could be several versions of the real ones, depending on where they were made.

They're also linked to Eircom for a discount offer. I ordered last week. very quick shipping and look the real thing.
I can't imagine both Eircom and Meteor dealing with some sham operation. No doubt it's not Converse themselves, just some reseller.

Usually I would stay well clear of a site like that but then you see the likes of Eircom and Meteor plugging them. I won't be buying though, I'm going to scout around elsewhere on the internet for a new pair of Converse.

They're actually one of the best driving shoes you can own. Total feedback from the pedals and flexibility.

Weightlifters also use them rather than expensive specialist shoes. I think several powerlifting records have been set by people wearing them.

Then you have to question why they are openly advertising their competitors.

I may have some interesting news about the site to post soon....

I got approval from the mods to post this email, which I got from converse themselves, note I am not claiming they are fakes, neither are they, but it might sway people to deal with an authorised retailer.

Converse saved my life - literally! Accidentally touched an exposed live wire at home a few years ago and but for the rubber soles I wouldn't be here today. God bless 'em!

After rubadub's confirmation email I got a pair of All stars for 40 quid with the code. Not bad as they're around the 55 mark in shops around Cork City that I looked in at the weekend.

Probably a dropship site. They take your order and order from somewhere else.

    €52.99 is too much anyway.

I always keep an eye on converse on amazon and you can get them for around €25 per pair sometimes.

Mine arrived today so very fast delivery. They came by courier in case anyone is wondering. I'm delighted with them.:) They are residing in the attic until 25th December when my 7 year old will be thrilled with them.

I can absolutley 100% confirm this site is a real converse site. - I was the original sales agent many many years ago and when they were bought out by Nike, they ditched their distributor here and appointed an agent.

the agent keeps a small selection of the primary colours in his warehosue for emergency retailer top ups, promotional use, replacements for faulty shoes and as a small side earner website.

Retailers will purchase their ranges months in advance and are stocked directly from Crawley in the UK. Anything other than an order for a dozen or so pairs by a etailer are also dispatcehd fromt he UK, but for small retailers who converse very nicely still support (unlike other big names) they may only want a dozen or less in order to manage stock properly - this is where the local supply comes in.

So hopefully you did not get too bored with that explanation, but I can say it is a 100% legit site.

If you know anyone still working there you could pass on that their site could use some work.
That "the truth is out there" thing is fairly terrible.

I'm out of the shoe trade almost 15 years now and gone from converse 25. So whilst I know who the person is, my last contact would have been a long long time ago, but the site is only a sideline for him and he obviously does not want to compete with the regular retailers.

Just had a look at the site - its not THAT bad. Easy to navigate, is only selling one product and whilst it doesn't have bells and whistles, its fully functional. Discount code & free shipping makes it attractive.

btw in 1986 they were £32.95 punts - same price as a pair of levis!!! - so very very little increase in price since, but they are now made in china whereas they used to be made in USA.

While it is functional it screams 'dodgy' which is a minor thing that should be addressed :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,302 ✭✭✭JohnMearsheimer

My shoes showed up today, I'm happy out. I would agree that the site should get a more professional make over. I'd imagine a lot of people looking at the site would just think it's a scam and look elsewhere. That's what I thought at first when I looked at the site anyway. If it wasn't for rubadub confirming the site was genuine with Converse I would have taken my business elsewhere.
