    This intro needs an intro:

    ....that oughta do it.

So then; just what is a Banjo Fella? Well, the Merriam Webster dictionary defines it as follows:
The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary. Click on a spelling suggestion below or try again using the search bar above.

    banjo clock
    band shell

What they fail to mention is that Banjo Fella is an artist, who skilfully sketches wildlife and lovingly crafts beautiful imagery of college lecturers as Nintendo characters.

He is a physicist and applied mathematician, who has pondered the mysteries of quantum rhombuses and very continuous assessments. After months of hard work, his final year project produced an ingenious new method of how not to crash light aircraft into giant buildings. True story.

He is the only person in the world to wear a monocle and top hat with a pair of Converse.

He's an amateur musician, toast enthusiast, toff, Pokémon trainer in waiting, future Time Lord and all-round 21st century Renaissance man.

He is the man that Wild Cherry were singing about when they prophesised: "Play that funky music, white boy!"

He is the bastard love child of Karin Dreijer and Brian Butterfield.

    He is......BANJO FELLA.

NOW MORBO DEMANDS THAT ALL YOU PUNY HUMANS INTERROGATE AND PROBE HIM. COMMENCE!

Ahh, that intro was so brilliant! An infinity of thanks to the good Cap’n for writing it and resultantly making me laugh harder than I have in quite a while. :P

    To start, how are you?

I’m doing fairly well, thank you! I did wake up and fail to return to sleep last night due to feeling sick, but otherwise I’m pretty good. I think I’m a lot happier recently, so, yay!

What, do you think of the budget?
Well, along with the discussions about the Euro potentially collapsing, Ireland apparently being screwed, recession/depression (makes it even more stomach-churning when they use words synonymous with mental health difficulties :/) and other such end-of-days murmuring, it bums me out a bit and seems anxiety worthy. There’s not much I can do about it, though, so I’m trying not to worry about it. I did find it hilarious that good ol’ fun-lovin’ Enda Kenny wanted to make a budget-related, serious business announcement right before the Late Late Toy Show. :pac:

    Evolution or creationism?
Evolution! It makes your Weedle less little, according to Pokémon.

Origin of your name, Banjo Fella?
When I was 12, I made a silly, embarrassing fan website (entitled Banjo-Fella’s Breegull Aviary) dedicated to this videogame I particularly loved called Banjo-Kazooie. So, I’ve been using the handle for quite a while and its relevance has long become pretty dubious. I’d come up with something more relevant if I could, but I suck. :P

    Looking forward to Christmas?
Oh yes! I love Christmas. :D This one’ll be particularly special, as my brother will be returning home from Germany for the week. We’re going to play through all of Zelda: Skyward Sword together, it’ll be aces. I’m also excited about (hopefully, if I can manage being less of a sloth than usual) preparing lots of small festive gifts for some friends.

What's the man in the big red suit getting you?
I have no idea! That’s half the magic, though. The other half is deliciously hedonistic quantities of materialism! :D Also, I, er... hope you’re referring to Santa, because otherwise I’m a bit terrified of this hypothetical crimson-suited pursuer.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? (only one)
Sadly, I think I already have one. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s That One Guy With The Superhuman Super Social Awkwardness! Clumsier than a newborn piglet, more embarrassing than The Loco-Motion, able to kill easy-going conversations with a single vowel!

    What about several super powers?
The ability to fly would be great, as would the ability to give memorably good high-fives, or spontaneously grow a moustache at will.

    That's all....for now...
    Okay, thanks! I eagerly await your next set of questions! ...no seriously please ask me more don’t leave me. *cling* ;_;

    What brought you to boards?
My good friend Captain Graphite insisted that it would be an excellent idea to join, and so I followed his advice. It was a fantastic idea, though joining it during the dreaded Study Month... er, wasn’t.

    Why is it so wonderful?
It’s a huge place, with so many sub-forums devoted to all kinds of topics. You’re bound to find a section of it where you fit in comfortably, and you’re likely to get to know all the lovely people who frequent that sub-forum when you do. It’s Ireland; now in handy crystallised internet form.

What is your favourite forum and why is it C&H?
My favourite C&H is definitely a forum. Wait... what? I’m confused. In any case, C&H is my favourite, yes, and it's brilliant for many reasons! Of all the sections of Boards I’ve ventured to, it seems to have the most consistently friendly group of people I’ve encountered. There’s a great atmosphere among the little community we’ve got going on here, which makes it very easy to post about anything - whether it’s whimsical or very personal.

    How do you beat procrastination?
Beating procrastination requires some hefty mental preparation, so I usually begin by checking my email, mindlessly cycling through websites I’ve already visited and compulsively making sandwiches for myself. Really though, I have a lot of trouble dealing with procrastination... it doesn’t always work, but I usually try reminding myself why the task I should be attending to is important to me, and try to block out anything that could distract me by listening to something nice and ambient; like Boards of Canada, Helios or RainyMood.com.

Why aren't you hosting the Jizzlers this year?
I felt it would be unfair for the host to win such a large percentage of the awards, it might seem rigged. :D ...or not. It's because I'm hugely lazy and incompetent. D:

Which Jizzlers will you be expecting to be nominated for?
Most Doddery Poster, Most Irritatingly Frequent User of Smilies

    Which Jizzler(s) will you win?
Best Beard. I don’t have a beard, but if I did I would sculpt it into something magnificent with the finest beard-wax available. Like so! My beard-keeping skills are wonderful; I’d take it for a walk twice daily, and water it regularly.

    Why a banjo?
Much to my shame, I can’t play the banjo. :( As for banjos themselves, why not? They’re great! Sufjan Stevens’ use of them makes me weep with joy, and we wouldn’t have that scene from Deliverance without them. Banjo himself (as in the bear here) is fairly awesome, too!

Can you play any other musical instruments?
I’ve been playing the violin since I was relatively small, so I’m competent enough at it! I’m a bit rusty recently, because I haven’t taken lessons since around the Leaving Cert. I started playing the drums two years ago, and I love it. I don’t have much experience, though, because I lost access to my friend Declan’s kit when he moved to Thailand. I’ve also casually been trying to learn the guitar... I’m fairly bad, but I’m happy with being able to play Blackbird and some Sufjan Stevens songs! I also sing occasionally, though I’d imagine people would prefer if I didn’t.

    Favourite place in the world?
As sad as this sounds, I actually really like being in my room. There’s nothing better than to gradually thaw yourself with a mug of hot chocolate beside a radiator after enduring some horrific weather as you trudged your way home. Lame, but terrifically cosy.

Place you'd most like to visit?
I’d love to visit Japan at some point (Studio Ghibli Museum!), or maybe New York. Apparently the Natural History Museum there is amazing, so I could probably spend days inside it. There was also this place our coach passed when I was on a school tour way back in Transition Year, I could see this amazingly picturesque, tiny village of snow-coated wooden cottages nestled into the side of this winding, pine tree covered mountain we were travelling over... I don’t know the precise location we were in at the time, but it was really striking for some reason, and I’d love to return there if I knew where it was.

Question 1: Why are you so good at art?
So good? More like... um, so-so good? I sold my soul to a Tesco Value demon, earning me all the eternal damnation but only a meagre helping of skill.

    Question 2: Why?
The experienced demons were away on a tea break. Seriously though, thanks so much, Sir Mantis! A lot of the time I feel as though I’m not good enough, particularly for somebody who wants to make a career out of it. It’s made worse by thinking I’ve sort of “wasted" the past four years studying physics when I knew I should have been working at drawing, it’s like I have to do four years’ worth of catching up, and then some. Ah well, I did really enjoy physics too, so I'll just have to work with the circumstances I'm in. Anyway! To improve at art, I think you simply need to keep practising and practising. In the beginning you’ll produce lots of stuff you’re unsatisfied with (goodness knows I do), but as you continue studying and attempting to understand the aspects you have difficulty with, you’ll gradually develop your ability and your style. Don’t give up, essentially!

Question 3: What artists inspire you?
I really like Leyendecker and Norman Rockwell’s stuff... those early 20th century illustrators were amazing, there’s something so realistic, charming and character-infused about their work. I love Alphonse Mucha and Van Gogh, too. I’m sure there are many other classic artists I’d love, I’ll need to explore a bit more of art history before I’ll discover them. I’m usually most inspired by contemporary young artists whose art is viewable via the magical properties of the internet; I adore the art of Lois Van Baarle, Emmy Cicierega, Karl Kwasny, Claire Hummel, Alice X. Zhang, Viktoria Ridzel, Matt Cummings, Phobs, and quite a few others who post their stuff online.

    HALLO.
ES IST GUT JA HIMBEERMARMELADE HALLO ?

Your sig is awesome :P Favourite Black Books episode?
Black Books is amazing! It’s going to be tough to pick a favourite episode... the first one that came to mind was The Grapes of Wrath. I love that “it’s some sort of delicious biscuit,” “it’s a coaster,” “oh... are there any more?” exchange between Manny and Bernard. :D

    Favourite band/song/album?
Oof, again, this is going to be impossible to pick! I’m not sure if they’re my favourite band, but I seem to always fall back on listening to Boards of Canada when I want to listen to music but don’t have anything particular in mind (other than when I listen on shuffle, of course). It’s like having your ears assaulted by a relentless flow of fluffy bunny rabbits, until your whole mind is a seething landscape of cuddly lagomorphic joy... er, in a good way. So, I’ll go with Boards of Canada/Music Is Math/Geogaddi. I feel somewhat guilty about leaving all the other bands and musicians I really, really like out of this reply. Sorry guys! You’re my favourites, too.

Do you want to write a history essay for me?
    Not particularly, but if in doubt, quote huge sections of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy, like so;
Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.

Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

This planet has—or rather had—a problem, which was this: most of the people on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.

And so the problem remained; lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches.

Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should ever have left the oceans.

And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small café in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything.

Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone about it, a terrible, stupid catastrophe occurred, and the idea was lost forever.

    This is not her story.

    Favourite revolution?
...Dance Dance Revolution counts, right? I used to play this Korean imitation of the game called Pump It Up (it had four diagonally positioned pads and one central one on its dance mat) to a worrying, unhealthy extent during my misguided teenage years. Sadly (or possibly thankfully) the Leisureplex elected to remove their copy of the game from their arcade a while ago. The good memories of destroying pair after pair of shoes upon it and choreographing horrendously cheesy doubles routines with some friends will stay with me, though! Haunting me to the grave.

Favourite element of the periodic table?
Francium’s a fairly good one! It’s extremely rare, and extremely useless because it’s so reactive that nobody's managed to have it exist for long enough to find a use for it. Plus, it’s mere letters away from “Frinkonium”, with the hoyvin-glavin.

    Favourite sub-atomic particle?
Anti-strange quarks (or anti-squarks) clearly have the best name. The gauge bosons are probably the ones I find the most fascinating, especially photons.

    Favourite memory from college?
Probably this one time in 2nd year when Niall Ó Murchadha came doddering into the physics lab with his arms outstretched, cradling a mushroom in his hands. “Have you seeeen this? I found this beautiful thing sitting under a tree outside,” he proclaimed, with this really goofy, distant expression on his face, “mushroom!”. That man’s just... legendary, in so many ways. Another contender would be in 1st year, when Dr. Thomas looked forlornly at his lecture room apparatus and said “I am attracted to this projector”. I also thought of that moment at Heather Patrick’s party before 4th year, when you, and Cian, and a few others started singing a rather different version of Buffalo Soldier. :P

Top five favourite and least favourite Pokémon?
Ah, this should be fun! My favourites would include Lapras, Ninetales, Espeon, Togekiss, and of course good ol’ Pikachu, so I’ll go with them. There are quite a few others I’m really fond of too, though, like Mew, Jirachi, Suicune, Cyndaquil, Shinx, Elgyem, Krokorok, and ridiculous things like Probopass and Toaster Rotom. As for my least favourites... Claydol are Cryogonal are horrifying, Spiritomb is really aggravating to fight, as is Shedinja (even though his design is very cool), and Arceus is sort of bizarre as melted llama Pokégods go.

Your awesome friend, who shall remain nameless, has for the second year in a row been dumped right before his birthday. How do you plan on consoling him?
Please say this is a hypothetical scenario, rather than a prophetic one. D: Well, I’d start by throwing a party for this nameless person of substantial intrigue and presumable suaveness! At this magnificent party, I’ll arrange to have Alan Rickman himself recite Shakespearean soliloquies for said friend. Soon after, Kim Deal and Cat Power would perform a duet together, covering all of his (er, not Alan Rickman, the friend) favourite albums in sequence. Much later, all three of them would get into a drunken argument about which one was to win this friend’s favour! Much to their dismay, Christina Hendrick’s would already have made off with him, and together they’d go jetpacking about the place, dumping various buckets' worth of rotten fruit upon the dumper who had previously caused such poorly timed offence.

Who would win in a fight to the death between Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits? (Ignoring the fact that Beefheart is already dead...)
Assuming that they fight to the death through the medium of song, I’d imagine that Beefheart’s madcap howling and Waits’ pitch black gravelly growling would somehow balance each other out, resulting in the cancellation of all sound waves across the universe, and a stalemate for the two combatants. If you listened hard enough in that absolute silence of unheard “t’old fart”s and “FOR A BUCK”s, you would hear the sound of true enlightenment.

    Business time or Bismuth time?
It’s bismuth! It’s bismuth tiiiime! (60% of the time, it’s bismuth every time)

    Partial Differential Equations or Electromagnetism?
That’s like asking if I’d rather freeze to death in the forever expanding vacuum of space or be torn atom from atom by the gravitational differential near a black hole. D:

    Patriarch or sliced fried potatoes?
Potatoes can be patriarchs now? I’m joining me that tribe/organisation/group, and having some chips while I’m at it!

    Hello.
‘Lo there! How’re you this evening?

Why have we never talked befo'? :O
I’m not sure, but it’s most likely because I spend far too much time lurking, rather than posting. Damn my reclusive tendencies! Ah well, we’re talking now, anyway. Well, not actually talking, strictly speaking, as we’re actually exchanging strings of text over t’interbox... but still!

    Do you like cats?
I do like cats! Unfortunately, I seem to be fairly allergic to them (or I was the last time I checked, at least) which means I have to like them from a safe distance.

    Dogs?
Oh yes, I love dogs! I’ve had two in the past, both of which were Springer Spaniels (evidently my parents aren’t the most imaginative of pet owners, as they were known as Bran the Second and Bran the Third, respectively). Here’s a photo of one of them! Sadly, he was stolen when I was 11, and we haven’t had another pet since.

    bran-1.jpg

    Any brothers or sisters?
Yep, I have an older brother named Tomás. He’s around three years older than me, and he studies music. He’s currently doing an Erasmus in Leipzig.

Ill fight ya for your shoes..?
Startin’ on me? I’ll bop t’head off-a ya, like, my fine fellow.

    Can you play the Fadog?
I can indeed! I used to attend these Ceóltas sessions when I was in primary school, where I learned to play that and a bit of traditional fiddlin’. Er, with a violin, I mean, obviously. o_o

Even though it's Irish, would you agree it's really annoying unless played right?
Ughhh, yes, definitely. My dad’s one of the best feadóg players I’ve encountered, but it still becomes extremely difficult to concentrate on anything when I hear him practising across the hall from my room. There’s basically no way of muffling the noise, and I don’t want to upset him by asking him to be quieter, so it’s a tricky situation! :/

What type of music are you into?
I like quite a lot of stuff, really! Sometimes I like listening to something calm and relaxing like Boards of Canada, Helios, Sigur Rós, Lemon Jelly, Dave Brubeck, other times something frantic and electronic like Squarepusher, Polysics, Anamanaguchi, plenty of other times I’ll want to listen to Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Fever Ray, The Beatles, Bright Eyes, Porcupine Tree, Nine Inch Nails, Ladyhawke, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, or Modest Mouse, Beck, The Faint, Björk, My Bloody Valentine... and all sorts of other things, too.

    Do you like Eminem
Er, not hugely, sorry, but I do like M&M’s and Mahnà Mahnà!

    I do.
Steady on! Might be a bit too soon to be making any vows, considering we hadn’t even talked before these two posts.

What are ya getting off Santy Clause?
I really don’t know! Hopefully something nice, anyway... i.e. not tuberculosis.

Should i have spelt that Claus or Clause?
It’s usually “Claus”, but “Sandy Claws” is a good alternative. Or so I’ve heard it said.

    Are you easily annoyed?
I have the patience and terminal charm of Father Stone, so no, I don’t usually get annoyed very easily. Only if somebody’s being particularly obnoxious, bigoted or discriminatory, at which point I tend to get VERY ANGRY INDEED RAR EOIN SMASH.

    What is your Pet Peeve?
I get very annoyed when people are more concerned with prestige and “social status” than they are concerned with doing what truly, independently makes them happy. Especially when they expect it of others, too.

    Do you believe in God?
    I have no idea. :/

    Ghosts?
Nope, other than the ones we can’t let go of.

    Aliens?
Yes! Well, not the grey, bulgy-headed, gangly-proportioned, Roswell Incident type ones, I just mean that I believe it’s fairly likely that life exists in some form or another on other planets. It happened here, so we know there’s a certain probability of it occurring! There’s a countless number of other planets out in the universe which we can apply that same probability to, so surely it must have happened somewhere else, too?

Do you like subway? What would you get out of it?
Yep! Both the subterranean locomotive variety and the purveyors of toasted, bespoke sandwiches! I haven’t visited Subway for quite a while, but I used usually get one of their delicious white chocolate cookies and something involving Hearty Italian bread... can’t remember exactly what it was, but it was super tasty.

    Do you like tea!?
Oh yes! With optional Jaffa Cake.

Do you like the cheeky girls?
Do you mean the subset of the set of all girls for which the adjective “cheeky” (whether in reference to demeanor or appearance) applies? Er, I guess you mean the band. I’m sure they’re among the finest virtuosos and pioneers of the Europop genre, but I’m not personally a fan of them. :P

    Kthxbye.

I tried one out in music shop once, and other than some differences in finger positioning because of the size difference in the fingerboards, it was familiar enough! I'd probably have an easier time learning it than I'm having with the guitar, but still... currently I definitely cannot play the banjo. :p

    what music gets you bopping?
    Plenty of stuff! Here're some examples;

    cats or dogs?
I really like both, but I'd say I prefer dogs.

    your desert island discs?
    Radiohead - In Rainbows
    Arcade Fire - Funeral
Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adze
    Boards of Canada - Geogaddi

    Can you dance?
Yep! In much the same way that a giraffe can play the bagpipes. I love to, but it's probably best that I do my dancing in a controlled, sealed environment, where any observers are wearing the approved safety goggles (which do nothing).

    Any hidden talents bar art?
I can wiggle my ears, and I'm double-jointed in my left thumb.

What do you think of vegitarians?
I think they're pretty cool, provided it's not the defining aspect of their character! I've never actually encountered the pushy, self-righteous negative vegetarian stereotype, mind you, so I partly doubt it exists. What you eat is up to you, so you should be perfectly entitled to having a veggie exclusive diet should you want it, just as somebody else should be entitled not to. :) I can definitely empathise with vegetarians because meat sometimes grosses me out slightly, particularly in its uncooked state, or when the veins are still apparent. Blehhh. I'm sure there are plenty of health benefits associated with it, so that's fairly handy. Apparently the production of meat is considerably more resource intensive that the production of vegetables, so there's another advantage, too.

Pro life or pro choice?(optional question if ya don't want to)
Eep! Really morally subjective one, this. I think a lady should have the right to choose what does or does not happen to her body, so I'm pro-choice. I think it'd be a much bigger tragedy to raise an unwanted child without putting your heart into it than to choose not to have one.

    Do you wear an jewellery?
Only on weekends, when I want to feel so very pretty. Actually, I don't... but I do like the idea of bracelets, particularly if they have some sentiment attached to them, like friends sharing twinned ones. *sound of mawkishness-induced retching* I believe it may be possible to pull off some man-jewellery without having it look horrendous! Probably not on me, though.

Does a watch go on your right or left hand?
I typically use my phone when I want to check the time, but in circumstances where I'm forced to break my usually negligent attitude towards time-keeping, I wear one on my right... 'cause I can look at it while I write.

    Family guy or futurama?
    Futurama! It's toe-tappingly tragic.

What do you think of the budget?
I haven't been paying too much attention to it, really. The proposed disability cuts were fairly outrageous, so I'm glad they seem to be reversing that decision.

    Have you played Skyrim?
I haven't, nope. I'm sure it's a fantastic game (dragons, woo!), but I'm still a bit jaded with the Elder Scrolls games after playing so much of Oblivion a few years ago. It's probably best that I don't play it, given my obsessive need to finish games fully! :/

Have you ever had "The Fear"
The Fear" is the sense that you have done yourself some lasting damage after a night of drinking.

Er, yes, actually! There was one time when I blacked out at a gig after obliging a friend by disposing of her unwanted Smirnoff (which I mistakenly presumed was Smirnoff Ice). It was a horrible experience, and I still regret it hugely... I'm so sorry for all the hassle I must have caused. :/ I sometimes wonder if I didn't break something of my mind when I did that, because I can see huge differences in who I was before the time of that incident and who I am now. I'm definitely being completely irrational and ridiculous, though; those differences appeared because it was around the time I began struggling with career decisions and other self-confidence problems.

    Can you drive?
A bit? I did my theory test, took 10 lessons, drove whenever my dad wanted to go somewhere, and was essentially ready to take the test. But... I didn't, so my provisional license expired. I can't apply for another license until I book a driving test, so I'm hoping to arrange the exam soon and then practise and practise for the few weeks before it. Hopefully it'll work out! I get fairly anxious while driving, it's a lot of responsibility, in ways.

    Do you like musicals?
I haven't seen/heard many, but I think I'd enjoy them provided they were good examples of the style. I don't tend to be put out by musical sections of movies, unless they're horrendously dated... I dislike that saccharine warbly-vibrato'd singing style used in a lot of pre-'50s Disney movies, for example. Of the ones I've seen, I love Singin' in the Rain and the Nightmare Before Christmas's musical sections.

Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings?
Very, very tough choice, I'm fanatical about both. The LotR movies are better than a lot of the HP movies, but the HP books are possibly a more enjoyable read than LotR? How can you make me choose, I love them both! :p There's a hair's difference between them, but I'll go for Harry Potter because Alan Rickman.

    Favourite film?
Live-action: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
    Animated: Spirited Away

    Favourite county?
I always enjoy visiting Dublin because of the bustle and the lovely architecture and its Natural History Museum, but... Cark. Shur how could you beat a bit of Cark, like?

    Do you play any sport?
I used to play basketball and tennis in secondary school, but haven't for ages, now. I go swimming once or twice per week, and sometimes consider taking up Taekwondo again.

If you had unlimited time, energy and resources what art project would you embark on?
Wow, that's an excellent, but really tough question! I love drawing, but I'm not sure if I'd be imaginative enough to head a project like that. I'd love to create some kind of animated movie, possibly involving tiny woodland animals, and ramshackle hot air balloons made from mushrooms and leaves. It'd drag you through emotional hell, but would still have a happy ending to reward you for your empathetic investment in the characters. Comics are a great medium, too... I honestly don't know what I'd try, though, sorry!

So I was thinking about modern art the other day. If someone stole, for example, the Mona Lisa and replaced it with a forgery there'd be some art experts who could tell. But if you stole a piece of modern art and replaced it with a forgery, surely no-one would know? Can a shark in formaldehyde truly be forged? This made more sense in my head

    Most controversial opinion?

Favourite word? Simile? Five syllable word?

During the construction of a high-tech scarecrow you were given the option of using the grunts and growls of either Tom Waits or Captain Beefheart. Which would you choose?

    Al Pacino or Robert DeNiro?

How do you dry your towels?

I know my week in the 'pen is just about over, but would it be alright if I answered these last few questions first? Feel free to lock away afterwards, of course! :)
Is Lady GaGa a creative genius or is it all for show and publicity?
I haven't listened to very much of her stuff, really, but I'd say she's quite talented if she does write her own songs. Some of her stuff is very adventurous as far as pop songs go - personally I think Judas is a fantastically complex bit of composition! Her videos tend to be very imaginative too, though I don't know if that's a result of her input or the creative team supporting her. Bad Romance irritated me, but that may have been due to how overplayed it was at one stage. Anyway, she's a pretty cool Gaga who dresses fabulously and doesn't afraid of anything.

Hmm, well, maybe? If it were possible to build extremely small toroidal fusion reactors, we could all be going about the place like Iron Man. A bit unlikely, though, given how tokamaks are being built at bigger and bigger scales to try and reach having the energy output exceed the energy needed to sustain the reaction! I'll eat some plutonium and get back to you about it. :p

    FETAC Level 8 - Great?
Pretty great, but not as great as Level 100 Blu-Tack!

    Carrot juice or pumpkin juice?
I've tried neither, but if I were a witch, I would give that witch some pumpkin juice. Witches love pumpkin juice.

    Turbines - spin or oscillate?
    Hamster-powered turbines are the future!

Astonomy - dark matter or dark energy?
I like dark energy. It's fascinating that the universe's expansion seems to be accelerating and we have no idea why. It could be a quirk of our observational position within the universe, or it could mean that there's some repulsive analogue to gravity that works over huge distances... whatever the case, it's something huge and exciting that we have yet to understand.

Mars rovers - Opportunity or Spirit?
They both look adorably similar to Wall-E, so please don't make me pick favourites!

Christmas - Santa or Coca Cola?
Santa! He brings free stuff, portly merriment and Christmas wonder to all.

    Medical - Tinnitus or tachycardia?
As annoying as tinnitus can be when you're trying to sleep, at least it's not potentially life-threatening... so, it wins this round.

What is your most memorable moment?
The first thing that came to mind was last August of last year, when Rare - the company that make the Banjo-Kazooie games - spotted a bit of fan art I drew of their characters and were somehow impressed and kind enough to send me some promotional swag in my direction. I also thought about the first time I ever saw a snow-covered landscape, it was just so amazingly beautiful, I had never seen anything like it before. That feeling still hits me every time I wake up to fresh snowfall.

    Toughest task you've undertaken?
I liked studying physics, I really did enjoy it, but there were definitely some deep, dark moments when it utterly crushed my spirits and self esteem. I felt so trapped by the course decisions I had made, because I knew there were other things that I had much more passion for, and that I would feel more capable at. It made me feel utterly useless sometimes, for having difficulty with the coursework and for lacking the guts to assert control over my own life. Sticking with it to the end was probably the hardest thing I've done.

    Thank you.
You're very welcome! It was a pleasure to answer your questions, Mr. Jumpy. :)

Sorry, I'll try to lurk less! I'm fairly quiet in person, and it seems my online persona isn't much different. I would love to post more, though, and I have a lot more free time now, so I'll see if I can improve at this business of saying stuff at least semi-regularly.

Hardy Bucks - the voice of a generation or not very good?
It's scarily realistic, and as mad as a bag o' shpiders.

Who'd win in a swordfight between Israel and Palestine?
    Historians?

So I was thinking about modern art the other day. If someone stole, for example, the Mona Lisa and replaced it with a forgery there'd be some art experts who could tell. But if you stole a piece of modern art and replaced it with a forgery, surely no-one would know? Can a shark in formaldehyde truly be forged? This made more sense in my head
That's a good one! Suppose it depends on the nature of the art - if it was something meticulously crazy like Pollock, it'd probably be even harder to fool art boffins because of how random and unlikely the patterns are. It'd be so difficult to replicate something like that perfectly, and much harder to get away with it now that photos of all kinds of works of art are so readily available online. As for the really bizarre stuff that stretches the definition of art, I'm not sure... you'd probably have less people who'd care enough to notice the difference. :p It'd be interesting if something like a formaldehyde-steeped shark turned out to be revered as a cultural landmark in centuries to come. Even well preserved sharks will ultimately rot away, so maybe you'll have restoration efforts like the ones in the Sistine Chapel, where they try to clone the shark and have it pickled in the exact same way - which would be a forgery too, really.

    Most controversial opinion?
Mine? Er... people should be allowed to like each other and stuff regardless of the genders of the parties involved? ZOMGS AND SHARP INTAKE OF BREATH! Seems reasonable to me and a happily plentiful load of others, but it's crazy that it's still somehow a source of controversy.

Favourite word? Simile? Five syllable word?
Word: Ack, there are so many contenders! I'll go with these for now, but I'm very changeable when it comes to this topic: defenestrate, mongoose, milquetoast, sternum, spatula, steeplejack, balderdash, zyzzyva, xenophobic, quixotic, supercilious...
Simile: "The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't."
Five syllable word: ... grandiloquently? :p

During the construction of a high-tech scarecrow you were given the option of using the grunts and growls of either Tom Waits or Captain Beefheart. Which would you choose?
I'd use Tom Waits! When amplified with a megaphone, his voice could curdle the untapped milk of the Devil's own goats... in the best sense.

    Al Pacino or Robert DeNiro?
Robert! Now there's a man I'd like to cast as Wario. Not in a movie or anything, just in general. I'd hire him out whenever I needed someone nearby to say "waaaah!" in a comedy Italian accent.

How do you dry your towels?
Manly man that I am, I coerce my towels by repeatedly punching them with my eyebrow muscles.

Which celebrity would you like to spend a Bank Holiday with and what would you do?
I'd love to meet Benedict Cumberbatch and spend the whole day introducing him to people. "This is Be-ne-dict Cumb-er-batch!" He's got the best name ever, it's way too fun to pronounce. Maybe he'd introduce me to Martin Freeman, and that'd be a whole other Bank Holiday's worth of funtimes.

Name one thing that everyone else seems to like but you don't.
Watching sport, and non-fussy dietary habits. :/

I hand you the deeds to a pub. You correctly decide that 'The Pub' is a crap name and warrants a name change. What do you call it?
The Big Bad Legless Lupus - besozzler of pilgrims since 1647.

    Favourite dictator?
Stalin! Shur how could you not want to be subjugated by a moustache of that calibre?

If you had to choose between being raised by puffins or penguins which would you choose? And why?
Penguins, they seem to know all the best jokes, and I'm masochistic enough to enjoy a nice, good, jaw-shatteringly appalling pun. Plus, they huddle together into a big ball of penguin in order to keep warm, how cute is that? I do love puffins too, though.

Hmm, I'm not completely sure yet... I know I want to become a lot better at drawing, and hopefully find a way of doing it professionally. I would love to go to some kind of art college if I could find something suitable and affordable. It's definitely possible to do well by yourself if you've got enough determination, but I have the feeling that being in a good course with similarly enthusiastic peers around you would provide the best environment for learning, improving and receiving useful criticism.

I'm putting together a portfolio for the year, anyway, which should be useful no matter what I decide upon. I also know of a few people who should be able to give good advice regarding which colleges/courses to consider and which ones to avoid, and whether or not they feel a course would be beneficial for me in general. I'm going to ask what they'd do if they were in my position, seeing as they have experience at breaking into the industry.

    Your stuff is pretty incredible!
Thank you! You're really kind. I feel like I have a lot of work to do, but I really appreciate the compliment. :)
