shimano sti levers - cable stuck

I had this problem on a dura ace right hand shifter. I eventually worked the cable end into a position near the lever and forced it out with a long nosed pliers. Oddly enough I was delighted it broke because the gradually fraying cable was causing intermittent upshifting failures on my race bike that I was unable to diagnose. Did you have similar before it broke?

thanks, no i hadnt had any specific problems other than those caused by my own poor adjustments...I think !

I had this problem only 2 weeks ago: released the cable by slowly releasing cable tension with the shift lever while un-snagging the frayed cable end with a small screwdriver.

It's a fiddly job, be patient.

I think the OP's problem (and mine) was where the cable was already broken at the shifter and the cable stop has dropped down into the shifter mech which if left there will cause it to jam.

My cable was snapped about half a cm from the cable stop. I guess the frayed cable helped with the retention of the stop.

not sure really. The cable has a bit of to and fro play in it now, but it wont pull the mechanism round so I can see the slot where the cable end normally sits, so I can take it out. Going to have another look now, not going to be rushing into drilling anything or splashing out any spondoolics as these levers are not cheap !

...and I rushed into drilling a hole ! Actually twisting a screwdriver into the lever. This revealed nothing much other than a view of the channel where the cable lies, oh dear how many holes will i need I thought....

But given a pit of pulling with a tooth pick the cable end revealed itself and I managed to get it out (via the normal route). Cable had a few frays near the end, sp perhaps thats what was stuck the mechanism.

So when I put a new cable in tomorrow (with an evenings pause first to allow kharma to descend) hopefully Bob will be my uncle.

Thanks for the advice to be patient !!!
