E90 cooling fan running on after engine off

    Hi All,

Is anyone familiar with the e46/e90 with n46 engine? The cooling fan is some times running after engine off. I've check coolant sensors with diag tool and the seem to be reading fine.

I assume the engine cooling fan is running on a sensor in the coolant return from the rad (eg the bottom hose).

Has anyone observed this before. I'm more familiar with the m43 engine than the n46.

    Thanks

The fan can stay on if the coolant temperature is still high when the car is switched off, i.e if you were driving in heavy traffic etc before switching off.

The fan can stay running on theses cars if the engine is still a a certain temp when shut down for a min r so after.notting to worry about unless it's staying on for prolonged periods.

    hi guys,

thanks for the replies above. I've noticed it quite a few times. I wasn't in heavy traffic this evening and it was about 3C outside, so i wouldn't of expected the fan to be coming on at all.

I'll have to plug in and check the coolant temps the next time it does happen. I had the coolant return sensor fail on an E46 before and this cause the fan to run any time the ignition was on, eg failed safe, but never ran on after ignition off.

One other quick cooling related question. When the engine is warming up it seems to take ages for the internal heater matrix to get up to temp. I've had both an E36 & 46, both of these got up to temp very quickly. The stat seems to be working correctly. This engine is fitted with an oil cooler / heater? There is basically a heat exchanger fitted at the oil filter (see circled in red in attached pic from one of ND other posts). Looking at the plumbing its basically in parallel with the internal heater matrix. Was looking at the same model n46 engine a year later this heat exchanger is no longer fitted. This seems to be the preferred path for the coolant over the internal heater matrix, its a much shorter path anyway. I'd half like to see what the difference would be if this was disconnected or at least clamp one of the hoses.
