hi, my friend just broken off a wheel nut on his 01 seart inca van, there was 1 alreadly brokenfrom last year so another head has just snapped off now.
is there an easy way to remove the other thread piece from the hub as it must have been seriously overtightened.

    thanks

Much more likely that they were cross threaded when being fitted then overtightened.

They will likely have to be drilled out and if they are cross threaded the hub may have to be re-tappped.

    thanks,

its been overtightened he says as he tried to turn it the wrong direction,
is it a big job drilling it out

how much of the old wheel bolts are still remaining? eg where did they break?

There might be very little tension left on the remaining bit of the bolt (assuming it wasn't cross threaded).

If there's a decent bit left on them you could try a vice grips or stud extractor. If they are snapped level with the hub I would try drill a hole into them and use an easy out.

Yeah easy outs are very handy so long as there not. Ross threaded .
If not a breakers yard will do u a hub for a few quid .
The frount hub being a bit more difficult to change but not too bad

Definitely don't listen to the vice grips part anyway it will just make things worse.seriously just drill it out and if u try drill a hole In it and the break the easy out it it ul never remove it.listen to experience I'm telling u just go get a new hub I bet it will be cheaper and less painfull then what has being sent.ive seen to many people f**k things like that up and a hub won't be expensive anyway.

If it broke due to over tightening then the threaded part left in the hub won't be tight, its the chamfer on the head of the nut that tightens against the hub so once the head is gone the threaded part has nothing to be tight against.

So in this instance, if there is enough of the threaded part sitting proud of the hub to get a good grip on with a decent vicegrips then it should come out. If not then a good quality drill bit and easy out will get it no problem.

If its cross threaded though, then a second hand hub may be easier..

Well if you take the brake caliper off and slide the brake disc off you will expose more of the broken wheel stud .
If you can get a vise grip on it give it a go !
If it works it works .. If not no harm done ?

ok i give this a go and hopefully we can get the van sorted for him, anyone know what way size 17 bolts that holds on the caliper turns to loosen, is it anti clockwise?

    thanks

Practically all bolts loosen anti-clockwise. The can be very tight though as they usually(should) have thread lock on them

Ehhhh hold on a mo ?
If your not sure which way bolts/ nuts loosen .
You should proably get some help when you Work on the braking system of a car or a van .
That's a very important and dangerous thing to be tinkering with .
