How to pay taxes as an independent contractor?

I've very recently come off the dole and I am now working full time as a tattooer.

From what I know most tattooers (legitimate tax paying ones anyway!) work under the roof of a tattoo studio as independent contractors. There is a 50/50 split on earnings between the tattooer and studio for each tattoo done.

Could someone point me in the correct direction online as to how I go about looking after myself tax wise so that the revenue don't come knocking on my door in a few months :)

Also, any details regarding tax breaks, etc that I might be entitled to would be great.

    Thanks :)
