Peugeot 407 Electrical Madness - Should I Be Worried?

    Hi All,

I have a 2005 Peugeot 407 1.6 HDi, and am having all kinds of crazy electrical problems:

    1. It started a few months ago when the ABS and ESP warning lights starting coming on intermittently, and now come on all the time. Mechanic said (over the phone) it was probably dirt, and he'd fix it at next service (due shortly).

    2. Then the "tyre pressure not monitored" warning started coming up and comes up all the time now (after about a mile or two).

    3. Then the particle emmission filter light (I think that's what it is) started coming on now and then, and now comes on most (but not all) days.

    4. Then warnings for "left hand stop bulb faulty" and "direction indicators faulty" started coming on, again intermittently, but now every time I turn left (for the indicators).

    5. Every now and then, I also get a STOP warning light, which says tyre pressure is too low (when it isn't).

    6. Now (an hour ago), I was sitting in the car with the heater fan on and, when I turned it off, the entire dashboard, and the front lights on the car all went off (dunno about the back, but presume they did too). It was only for a second - they came back on right away. (Now I'm worried I'll be driving in the dark and the lights will simply go out.)

These days, when I start the car, I have to endure one warning beep after another telling me all the above. It's a "good" thing they appear immediately after starting too, because the bloody LCD display fades into unreadability after a few miles driving anyway!

Anyone have any inkling what's going on?

    Tommy.

    Hi Tommy,
1.Nine times out of ten one of your abs sensors have failed...A diagnostic will confrim.

2.Are all of your tyre pressure monitors in place...?...did you swap around/change your tyres lately..?

3.what message were you getting on the centre display..?
what mileage is on your 407..?

4.There is a fix for this fault...you need to upgrade the rear earth cable to the rear light cluster...there is a guide on how to do this.

5.again like Q 2 check to see if all your tpms are in place etc

6.Never heard of this happening before......A daignostic check may pick up a logged fault after this incident...how old is your battery/maybe check connections etc.

Fading LCD displays are a common fault on certain 407's...once the LCD get warm/hot its very difficult to read....there is a modified one out but there from around £150 to €250 euros..:(

A good diagnostic check with a peugeot planet or equivalent diagnostic equipment will tell you alot...:)

Grand. I'll see what happens when my mechanic does the service.

Actually, I feel pretty silly now; I had a new value fitted to a tyre right before the warning lights appeared. :o

I can't remember the exact message off-hand (it's mostly unreadable anyway). I'll check it next time it shows.

The mileage is approx. 70-80k miles. (I say "approx." because I had to change the engine not long after getting it (coolant leak made everything go kerputt); the clock currently registers 150k, but there was c. 50k on the new engine, and I guesstimate I've done about 20-30k(ish) since.)

Cool; can you say where the guide can be obtained from?

    Uh-oh.

I'm not certain; I presume a new one was put it when the engine was changed (which was 09).

At that price, I think I'll live with it. :)

I got this one wrong; it's the depolution system light, and that's what the message on the centre display says (i.e. "Depolution System Faulty").

    Tommy.

The "Depolution System Faulty" could be anything from your airflow meter to low fuel pressure...A diagnostic will confirm.

If one of your wheels had a regular valve fitted your best bet is to get someone with peugeot planet to turn off your tyre pressure monitoring....or your could pick up a second hand tpm and get peugeot to program it in.

If you pm me your email address i can send some info on the rear light cluster earth upgrade...:)

Thanks for all your advice, Ron.

BRING IT TO YOUR LOCAL PEUGEOT DEALER!!!

I dunno Charlie, I think I would be cleaning up a few earths and dabbing on a bit of copper grease before going to the dealer - the list should be got down to one or 2 items if possible otherwise the dealer will cancel Tommy's Christmas!
If the battery is shot it could be causing some of these problems?

I think I accidentally bounced your e-mail Ron, but I found the details online anyway. Thanks for taking the time to send them though. I appreciate it very much.

With the prices my local Peugeot dealer charges, I'd have to cancel the next three Christmases. :) (:()

Perhaps. Service is scheduled for next Monday though; I'll see what happens then.

Same thing happened to friends focus and was alternator overcharging.

I've started to have nearly all these problems with my 06 Pug too. I wonder if there's a garage well known doing good work on Peugeots but not an official Peugeot dealership? Had my fusebox replaced by an official dealership last month and they charged me €650. Utter madness.

OP, you haven't had a problem with water getting into any of the rear lamp clusters?

I have had the same problems with my 2005 peugeot HDi for months but I now belief that I have the solution.
I had my battery checked and found that one of the cells was down. I replaced the battery in November 2013 and hey presto, no more problems.

Can't guarantee that it will work for you but it certanly worked for me.

Get your batterry checked by a reputable auto electrical engineer, it normaly dosen't cost anything.
