I'm collecting a campervan over in the UK tomorrow and a friend says that coz I've got my own policy on my Ford transit that I drive here, I'm covered to drive the camper we'll be collecting so long as I am not named as owner of the vehicle.

    true or false...?

Ring your insurance company, only they can answer that

    You may not be.

As far as I can remember,Setanta are the only company that offer the driving of other commercial vehicles on their policy however a camper van is not a standard commercial vehicle.

I know for certain that FBD dont want to cover camper vans, even on a short term basis as they are in a much higher risk category.

The only way to know though is to check directly with your insurer.

You buy the camper, you are the owner, named or not.

yeah but there'll be the pair of us going over to get it, so if -as he thinks- the general rule is that you must not be the owner (presumably because otherwise you could take the piss by having a policy on only one car but be using it to cover you for 2 or 3 if you or your family owned that many), then my non-driving friend would "buy" the campervan and I would drive it home.

we're not looking to avoid buying insurance altogether. we're buying the van to share between a few of us and will be getting insurance when it's back here and re-registered etc.

as suggested by others already, I should really just get on to my insurance company about it. was just hoping someone on here might have done similar before and known the deal with it

As Otis says, driving of other cars may be a regular extension on a car policy, but not driving of other vehicles on a commercial insurance policy. It is seldome given out. Also, if the camper van is registered as a private vehicle, it would apply anyway.

It will be on your Certificate.

Try Aviva in the UK for a temporary insurance policy, you'll need to give a UK address, ask the seller if they are ok with you using theirs or alternatively use the address of anywhere you may be staying enroute, doesn't need to be permanent. They should be able to give you cover for a few days to get it home, not like the 12 months bollixology here.

    thanks all for the feedback.

turns out I wouldn't be insured, so have to get a couple days insurance to sort it.

Several years ago I asked my insurance company if the driving other cars extension covered me in Northern Ireland.

The answer was a most definite no. The extension is only valid in RoI, it was through AA but I can't remember the underwriting company.
