We can finally remove that Astrix for all future tournament winners now that the real Tiger is back.

    Let the begrudging begin.

The greatest of all time is back, just what golf needs.

As good as Tiger is / was, I could never really warm to him. Best I could ever do was give a kind of grudging respect. Probably good for the sport to have him back winning, but on a personal level, I couldn't care less.

I hope the other players have learned a few things from the last few years. If I start seeing the likes of Rory, Kaymer, Day, Fowler etc crumbling on the back 9 of a big tournament like the rest of them did from 1997 to 2007, I'll turn off the tv!

McIlroy is the only good enough to challenge him consistently TBH . Only a handful on their day.

He won against a field of 18 with none of the top players in the world in the field, nothing to write home about.

    Mike,

He won in a field of 18 that contained 8 of the top 20 players in the world.

    Steve Stricker 6
    Jason Day 7
    Webb Simpson 9
    Nick Watney 10
    Matt Kuchar 11
    KJ Choi 15
    Bubba Watson 18
    Hunter Mahan 19

Granted it only had 4 players in the top 10 and none of the top 5 but it was hardly a field of muppets!

It also had major winners in Zach Johnson and Jim Furyk.

A field of 18, 17 of whom have had long hard seasons and are probably in "silly season" mode.

    why's that Deco?
you're last 2 posts are very defensive.......he makes a valid point
the only person who this win means anything to is Tiger, how would Tiger have done against a long straight driver like Westwood or McElroy over the last few holes?that would be a real test.....i'm happy he won but it's not a proper comp so no need for the excitement
very impressed with his shot into the 17th after Zach hit a decent one in there to put him under

    Let's look at the facts.

    It was a small field.

A field of players who have been playing constantly all year. Tiger has not.

It's his own tournament which he has won many times before.

He played some horrendous shots over the course of the week.

    That birdie-birdie finish was awesome.

To sum up, I'm not convinced.

I'll never understand the constant love in for Tiger Woods. I personally think he's a nasty vile person.

However, I love watching golf, and I appreciate that in order to keep getting the big sponsors, we need him contending at all these events.

It is exciting when he's in contention, but it's incredibly annoying listening to commentators salivating over him and constantly showing re-runs of his shots and worse of all, showing all of his shots when he's 10+ strokes out of contention.

fact is that when Tiger plays the gate takes in between 40-50% more in revenue so it's understandable that he gets more coverage,i for one love watching him

And people like Mat Kuchar who won close to 5 million last year without winning a tournament have a lot to thank Woods for.

Personally, I can't stand him, but it's obvious as to why the sport needs him so badly.

    Naturally enough I disagree.

He played well all week, and golf is no doubt better for having him back, but its hardly an important tournament in the bigger picture. Lets be honest, its an end of season money spinner for a very worthy cause(s) and has become a good TV spectacle as the course looks great etc.
eg I think Keegan Bradley finished last but I wouldn't think he was too concerned given what he won during the regular season.

Golf needs nobody.......sponsors and TV need him and that's only because people won't support the other players.

Agreed, golf was here before Woods and will be just fine when he is gone as well. The only people who "need" Woods are fair weather golf fans who don't appreciate the skills of the other top professionals. Sure, these people increase the viewing numbers and ticket sales, thereby increasing the purses the players play for, but we're not talking about the survival of the sport here, just a few hundred thousand more $$ for the multi-millionaires - nobody is going hungry here.
On a weekend where McIlroy and Westwood put in excellent performances (albeit Westwoods in an even more limited event), I'm looking forward to next season regardless of whether Woods is competitive or not.

So what, may I ask, will happen to golf in 5-10 years time when Tiger is finished for good? However he does in the next few years, he is on the last few laps of an incredible career. He is a long way more than halfway through his career. Should professional golf simply disband at that time?

I remember watching a lot of professional golf before I'd ever even heard the name Tiger Woods. I wonder how the game survived through those times. I couldn't care less if the first prize falls to $500k from $1m post Tiger. It won't make it any less enthralling to watch. In fact, tv coverage will probably be far more interesting since it will then be directed more towards the real golf fans instead of pandering to those who only want to see Tiger.

Don't get this "it was an invitational" bit.
Does this mean the players in the field play worse or don’t care as much? Ranking points out there for all at this event. Im sure G Mac and more were invited.

Also this crap about its Tigers tournament, what does this mean??? Does this mean he gets an extra shot on index 1-5 holes.... come on…….

I knew that would flush you out Martin567 - you sleep well last night?

Not sure but my guess would be

    More Major* Winners
Demographically the ethnic spread of the game will reduce
    Less Employment in Golf Sector
    Less Golf on TV
    Less Golf Tournaments...so
    Local economy will suffer
    Less Prize Money
    Junior Golf numbers will decrease
Professionals standard of the game may drop
    Less Golf Courses globally
Nike Shares will fall through the floor impacting employment, economy etc
    Less local members in clubs
Even more local clubs in trouble
    Less cash to Charity

The game will always go on but will be dramatically impacted once Woods goes...To say that you watched the game prior to Woods being around is missing the point..We've discovered by now that you don't care for the man and that fine.... but he does deserves a bit more respect

As you say, the game will go on regardless. It will miss the excitement and drama he brings and nobody could overstate his impact on audiences, revenues etc. I'm not his biggest fan but one round watching TW is more interesting that watching a thousand Webb Simpsons or Keegan Bradleys grind it out and he deserves huge respect for all of that, I don't think anyone on here would question that TBH.

I fail to see how I have disrespected Tiger in any way. He is undoubtedly the best player I've seen since I've been following golf and I've acknowledged this on several occasions. I don't think he's a very appealing character but that's just my opinion and irrelevant in the greater scheme of things.

Have you still not worked it out? It's not Tiger I have the problem with but the sycophants in the media (such as all the US networks & also Mark Roe last night!) and his "fans" who idolise him above the game itself.

talkin thru ur ass if you believe that nonsense
golf as we know it (big comps, great tv coverage, etc) needs woods
without him coverage would drop considerably
the golf industry, looking at it from a macro point of view, is obviously fooked without sponsors and tv
    woods is sponsors and tv
big phil is a poor second
and all those other pretenders like mcilroy, westie, poults, kaymer etc are so far down the list its embarrassing

woods has single handedly transformed golf
sure nicklaus, player etc had provided the platform
but woods has pushed the golf industry onto a whole new level

at the min no one is capable of taking his place (but inevitably someone will come along who can take his place in time - for example, who would have thought 15 yrs ago that Jack Nicklaus would ever have been replaced as the worlds greatest golfer of all time ever)

so as long as hes around and respectable on the course, he'll be calling the shots
he is the michael jackson of golf

Great TV Coverage my arse; it's way past saturation point because it seems there's no break between one season ending and the next beginning. It used to be better in my opinion when the 'season opener' was the Mercedes and it was held in February, not the first week of Jan... then Sawgrass and the the Masters.

Johnny Boring playing for a big chunk of twine at some hyped-up "tournament" doesn't interest me much.

Leave out the dumb childish comments.

Woods hasn't done anything for two years and golf hasn't imploded. Some of us have wider tastes and appreciate other players. I watch golf for the spectacle and not to see one idiot who couldn't control his personal life. If he plays then great, if he doesn't make the cut then too bad, if he wins then fair play......but there are many other fine players. What I cannot stand is the US TV following his every shot.

Woods has won once in two years and that was in a restricted event.......hardly a case for celebration.

    Define a true golf fan?

I like to watch all Tiger's shots. Love to watch how he struggles with his game so much and how he pulls these remarkable shots out of the bag to stay in touch and how he is always full of passion.

Rather watch that than watch KJ plod balls off the tee and hit rescues into greens picking up the odd birdie with about as much flair and emotion as a dead cat.

Does that mean I am not a true golf fan?

a bit off-topic, but in fairness to KJ, he hit one of the best bunker shots I've ever seen on Friday while playing with Woods - no green to work with, smashed it from about 10 yards and landed it on a six-pence - I'll see if I can find a link. It was just after a wonder flop shot from Woods as well, short game skills at their best.

Jack accumulated his majors at a time when I think (again just an opinion) there were more truly world class players in contention. Both Jack and Tiger had that something that made them unbeatable down the stretch.

What I want when a tournament is on is to see the best players at that moment in time, so if tiger is in 20th place I dont want to see his shots or him mentioned every 5mins. Its the pressure of the run in that makes a tournament exciting not someone 10shots off the lead duck hooking into the trees

If you would rather watch a struggling Tiger than the players at the top of the leaderboard in any given week, then the answer to your question is a simple "yes". That would make you a true and devoted Tiger fan but absolutely not a true golf fan.
