Hi all looking for some advice for my mum. My little brother will be 18 on xmas day and my mom has been on the one parent family payment since my dad left her 5 years ago.

She suffers really bad with irritable bowel syndrome when i say really bad some days she might be in and out of the toilet up to 30 times. The illness means she wouldnt really be able to take up a job as she would be in and out of the loo so much.

The problem is she wont apply for jobseekers as she is not actively seeking work because of he IBS so she wont qualify for job seekers.

I have told her to go to the doctor and ask him if she would be entitled for sick benefit (if there is such a thing ?)

Is there any payment she would be entitled to? I know she would prefer to be working but there is not many jobs where you can walk/run out to the loo 20-30 times in a day.

    Any information greatly appreciated.

Your Mom will receive opf once your brother is in full time education. If he is LC now the payment should continue until June next year and if he goes to college or partakes in PLC course she can receive payment again. If he does not go onto further education he can apply for jobseekers 3 months after completing his LC. You Mom should apply for Disability Allowance when her opf finishes. Bear in mind that she may be waiting a while for this to be processed. In the meantime she can apply to her community welfare officer for supplementary allowance. Make sure she keeps a copy of her application for Disability Allowance to show to the community welfare officer.
