The Answer My Friends ...

Last year a former Taoiseach from Drumcondra - who had presided over our economy throughout the years of squander said that “he wished someone had told him about what was going on in the banks during that time.”
Let us assume for the sake of argument that this Taoiseach was indeed as clueless as he claims – how then can our present and future incumbents stay abreast with the goings on in the banks and elsewhere in the economy? One method I would strongly recommend would be in the loo department. You see, during the Celtic Tiger years I knew all about the massive exposure of the Irish banks to foreign debt – how so I hear you ask – because as a professional toilet cleaner I made it my business to use pieces of newspaper instead of toilet roll for the posterior. Recycling in this way not only saves money but provides wonderfully insightful snippets of information into the state of the country`s banks for example.
This then is one way of educating our politicians – call on them to use cut up newspaper instead of using toilet paper. Admittedly – some newspapers are more informative than others and even the best newspapers have their limitations. For example, the aforementioned Taoiseach from Drumcondra also asserted that if it had not been for the collapse of Lehman Brothers – we`d have “gotten away with it a bit longer.” I doubt if my newspaper cuttings will ever tell me what “we” were trying to get away with and how long “we” were planning on getting away with it for. I guess there is only one man who can answer that – but I won`t be holding my breath.
