Anyone know where to get free scraps of wood?

I was just wondering if anyone knows where I might get free pieces of wood to build a cage with? I built a vivarium for my lizard a few years ago with scraps we had in the garden and varnished them till they shone and that's still going despite it taking about a day or two to make.
Now I'm looking to build a cage with wire and wood for keeping some of my rats in, but I can't seem to find anywhere that gives scraps away. I'll pay if it's reasonable, but it would seem counter productive to pay a small fortune for a stack of wood when the whole idea of building my own cage is to save money!
Would really appreciate any help in this matter

If it's actually Scrap wood you'd looking for, I've a bit? I have a load of wooden boards 12" X 12" X 1" which we do martial arts breaks with so there's loads of those broken in half around here?
