Should 18-28% of voters be culled?

In pastoral agriculture, herds are sometimes culled of the weakest elements to strengthen the remainder and eradicate disease. Given that 18% of voters, an increase on their election figure, now support FF in the polls, and 28% supported the Bagman Gallagher, should the state cull those who now support FF to freshen the national gene-pool and stamp out the FF virus? It would have the bonus of creating jobs in the new state death squad sector for the unemployed :pac:.

Seriously though, what can we do about the morons who insist on inflicting those crooks on us?

I don't think democracy has had the desired affect on the Irish public. A dictatorship may be the only way to rectify this defiance.

Sensational post. The only logical conclusion I can think of why so many people still vote f fail is that our water is fluoridated, there's no other logical conclusion.

And what about those who stopped voting FF, and voted for FG or Labour to carry out their policies instead?

Precisely. As long as you remember that we are - essentially a one-party (Fianna Gaelour) state you'll get you head around it. Promises made, promises broken; corruption; expense scams (you only have to live more than 12 Km away from the Dail to get a €140 a night unvouched overnight allowance); the list is endless. And don't even start me about that fcuking Senate.

Governments come and Governments go. The Senior civil Servants are there forever, with heir own protective agenda for both them and the REAL golden circle of themselves, politicians, the Public Sector and their "professional" buddies.

With the rest of us clowns paying for it all.

    A fcukung farce.

Sure what do polls and elections matter? If voting changed anything, it'd be made illegal.

Culling FFers would, ahem, concentrate a few minds.

    True.

Democracy is great for keeping people under control and sated. It feeds the illusion that the common man has an actual say in the running of things. Just like the way capitalism keeps people in place by promoting the illusion that even those at the bottom might also one day be wealthy and powerful so long as they stay in line and keep playing the game.

Compulsory voting Mmm. Sounds good,it is a civic duty . But what to do with thee ones that dont vote ? Stop their dole! or fine them? Or get them to dig a big hole for the unsecured bondholders.

I do know that in the land down under they have Compulsory voting for state & federal elections if you dont vote you get a fine.3,500 people were fined for not voting in the 2008.

If I were on the dole I'd have a lot of free time to use voting. I'd make sure to vote at every opportunity and I'd always vote for whomever would extend or increase my benefits :)

forcing people to vote it the dumbest thing you could do, i wish alot of people couldnt vote. there should be a test you should have to do before you vote, lisbon 1 is a fine example of ignorant voting

If there was a desire from the powers that be, for the maximum turn out, we wouldn't have midweek elections. Which raises a genuine question, why isn't there a desire for that?
I guess as a group in society it effects most significantly the number of students who can cast votes and perhaps they are seen as the most likely to do something revolutionary and vote Sinn Fein, or someone other than the norm. Im a worker and my work can often make it very difficult to vote midweek as I can suddenly be based away from my constituency, and Im sure many others share this disenfranchising experience.

14% voted FF in the last election, so 14% if anything.

Democracy has not worked in a long long time in this country, a decent future could be held in some other political system maybe? It's almost a dictatorship as it is, since the opposition dont really oppose much, the ones in power keep up the same circle of greed as the ones before them, and the ones who need help most get shafted as usual.

Absolutely. You only have to look at the Top 40 and the TV ratings (never mind the government) to realise that the general public are a bunch of fucking morons that shouldn't be left to tie their own fucking shoelaces in the morning, never mind decide who should govern us.

At the very least, there should be some sort of intellegence test to decide whether you can vote or not.

Hear hear, install Seamus Bin Laden Mubarrak as the new leader of the Country. A few roving death squads and a bit of ethnic cleansing wouldn't hurt anyone.

If people don't want to vote, I'm perfectly ok with that. The problem with democracy is that many people vote without knowing much about the canditates, their policies, or politics in general.

This is especially true in Ireland -"ah sure didn't I have a pint with him in the pub, he's a great lad, I'll vote for him".

What I would be in favour of (in theory) is there being some sort of fairly basic test that citizens would sit before being allowed to vote. Just a few basic questions about political history, the political system, economics and possibly others. This might eliminate a lot of the FF voters. How many times did we all hear people we know say "sure only FF can look after the economy".

Even a cursory glance at the economic situation would reveal this to be false but many people were too disinterested or too stupid to know otherwise.

The sad thing is that their votes were worth as much as the votes of people who actually had some clue about what was going on.

What's the point when only about 40-50% of those who are eligible to vote actually vote.

I was with you until the last line. Lisbon 1 was our answer and Lisbon 2 showed that the voting public have no back bone and cave under pressure. Plus that democracy is a myth in this country, just keep voting till we get the right answer.

There should be a citizenship test at 18 to get your civil rights such as voting, jury duty, etc. It should be based on CSPE and those who fail will enjoy full rights and entitlements like social welfare, public healthcare etc, but they won't have the right to vote, be elected , or go for jury duty. I'm a leftie and reckon everyone is entitled to their rights, but some rights that carry responsibility should be contingent on people displaying awareness of the consequences of those rights.
