i've a rad in a loader (perkins engine) and checkin the water level the water in the rad was gone a brown colour and a bit lik grease. So i took a few pipes off and tried flushin water thro it. Is this normal? Was a case of too much or too little anti freeze or does anti-freeze go off? Engine didnt heat or anything.

    Many thanks for any replies!:)

Anti-freeze does go off, the ordinary green glycol stuff should be changed every 2 years. Anti freeze is the wrong name for it as it does far more, it also raises the boiling point and stops internal corrosion.

It's possible the brown is just rust but saying it's like grease is a worry. Give it a really good flush and back flush the radiator via the bottom hose then fill with plain water and get it good and hot. Once it's cool have another look, you may have to do it a couple of times before it's clear. If all is OK put a fresh 50/50 mix in.

The stuff we're using is blue if it makes any difference a 20L drum. when i ran it to workin temp the grease lik stuff floated on it so when i took off pipe at the bottom of the rad water came out first than the brown grease lik stuff. I only did a quick flush on it on sat because i didnt have time to do a proper job on it. Will get it sorted 2moor hopefully.

    Thanks for ur help!:)

Blue/green/yellow is all gycol based. Sounds like you've just disturbed a load of sludge and rust hopefully.

Fresh coolant may find any leaks and dodgy water pump seals so keep a close eye for a few days.
