1G touch v 4G touch - differences?

I've got a first generation iPod Touch. It's still working fine but it's only 16GB. Every time I put new music onto it I have to delete an old file. I haven't used any of the latest iPods at all really. Basically I'm wondering what is the main difference between my one and the current models.

I got my current one for free. My mum won it in a competition a few years ago and I got it then. Would I be justified in spending 250 or whatever it is for a new generation one?

One last question. Will there be another model coming out soon that would possibly be better to wait for?

I had the 1G 8GB model and I only upgraded when the 8GB 4G came out last year. I haven't regretted it. It's so fast. I haven't needed any extra space but in terms of speed and what it can do it's light years ahead of the 1G and I'm glad I waited until then. Playing games and watching HD movies (720) is wonderful. There's probably going to be another version eventually but when is something no one knows for sure. I'm delighted with this model and wont be upgrading again for a few more generations.

It's possible they could release a 5g with the iPad 3. You just never know.

Very much doubt they'll update it till October-ish of next year and with the iPad 3 expected January/Febuary announcement I'd say there's pretty much no hope of a new iPod touch with the iPad 3

Perfect. I'll be asking Santa for one over the Christmas then. God knows how many days I'll waste with it downloading pointless apps and then trying them out. Can't wait.

The iPad 3 isn't expected that early.

I'm on Gen1 as well and the annoying thing is that it no longer accepts upgrades i.e. they are no longer done for it, so lots of new apps will not install to it. They sit there, nice and shiny, teasing me from my iTunes on my laptop, but they need a newer OS than the Gen1 will accept (methinks!).

The 1G wouldn't have the processing power or ram to handle a new OS to be honest. But nice device all the same in it's day

I recently went from a 1G to 4G iPod touch, mainly due to an issue with the headphone socket that could not be repaired.

    Advantages of the new model:
    external volume buttons
    loudspeaker
    can use newer apps
    better display
front and rear cameras, but not as good as on the iPhone

    Disadvantages
I sometimes have issues connecting to Wi-Fi at home.

Yea I was always annoyed by not having the external volume buttons and the speakers. I haven't been using the apps as much lately due to space constraints, but I will definitely welcome being able to download the lot now.

Do you think that the Wi-Fi issues are because of your connection or are they a fault of the iPod itself?

    I've had zero wifi problems.

The Wi-Fi issues are due to the IPod not getting/retaining the proper settings. My 1G iPod touch has no problems connecting when my new iPod touch can't connect, so it can't be my network.
