just had a look at other drainage threads there and seem to involve a lot of pipes and stuff! just wondering is there a simpler way to sort out a small garden without the need to dig a lot of trenches?? saw someplace they mentioned drainage stones, could you just use these and throw topsoil on top of them?? we'll be here for a few years so i don't want a major overhaul of the garden if possible.
    thanks

Quite simply you could dig a trench through the area to be drained and into an open drain. Then fill it to near the top with 1" clean drainage chips and top off with a bit of soil. The water will flow right through the chips and into the open drain.
However, drainage pipe is cheap and chips are expensive. It would be cheaper to put a pipe into the bottom of the drain and top it off with chips - also, it would be a better job.
