High emissions on '07 car

I'm looking at buy a '07 Focus (got him down to €5500). Thing is, the NCT sheet was in the car, and it failed the NCT on high exhaust emissions. Asked the salesman, and he said they thought it was because it had been parked up for a bit, and they would put something in it, and he was adamant that it would pass when they took it back up.

I don't doubt that it will pass this time, but high emissions on a '07 car seems strange. Could I just have a lot of problems when I get the next NCT on it?? Should I just steer clear of it?

    Thanks a lot guys!

A car sitting up will probably need some new ptrol in the tank, the stuff in it would probably have gone off a bit,

If the car comes with a warranty, I wouldn't be too worried as you can probably get it sorted for free, especially if they guarantee it specifically.

ok cool, thanks. So you don't think it could be a sign of an underlying problem? The warranty is for 3 months, and it would come with a new NCT, which they would get done before the sale. Just worried that it could be a problem down the line..

I would wait til the test was passed before making any further commitment. If for example, the car just barely passed the retest, there may very well an underlying issue there which may again lead to a failure in 2 years time. These type of issues can prove very expensive.

If it was parked up they probably sent it down cold. Emissions will always be higher when the engine is cold. Drive it for half an hour in low gears on the motorway and it should pass no bother.
