Connemara Half

    Hey All

Had this posted in the events section first - sorry

Thinking of doing the Connemara half, started training 10 weeks ago and am up to 15km now but very slowly 1hr 40min rolleyes.gif

Would the Connemara half be a good starting race? would anybody have a mapmyrun link for the 2012 route. I live in Slane so there's no shortage of hills round here but I'd like to try to replicate the route if I could just to get some idea of whether it's do-able for me or if I'd be better off concentrating on a different race (don't want to be last smile.gif)

Ultimate aim is DCM next year

    cheers

    Friggsy

You'll be fine Friggsy. You've given yourself a good long lead-in. You needn't push that long run much beyond race distance really. I presume you're doing other, shorter, work as well?

Certainly include some hill training then you can really enjoy the race. You'll be far from last.

    Good luck.

PS - don't get caught out not entering in time - the Half fills fast.

Hey Roy thanks for getting back to me.

My training is pretty basic, I'm doing 2 x 6KM runs and 1 long run. I'm not going to increase the long run until the new year but I'm hoping to get an extra 6k run in during the week.
I was going to start some hill training in January although every route around here contains hills of some sort - Just not sure if they're anywhere near as tough as Connemara.

Think I'll enter this weekend but I'd like to see the route( on mapmyrun or similar) to get a feel for how much I still have to go

Here's the full marathon profile - obviously you start at Mile 13 :) There used to be a really good virtual map of the route but I don't know where that's gone.

Hi Friggsyboy, you're blessed with hills around Slane alright. I did a run out there in the build up to the Warriors Run earlier this year. This is the route I done, Slane to Collon & back, as it's out and back you can adjust it to your own needs. I reckon I'll do it a couple of times again before Connemara myself.

I saw that virtual map, it's dated around 2007 or 2008

Hey Neil, I see you started from the river, tough hill to start with, actually tough course. I'll do that eventually but I'm not at those miles yet. I start from the middle of the village still decent climb out of the village but obviously no where near as tough as starting from the river ...Roll on Jan - I think lol

    Thanks All

There will be a half marathon in Meath on 4th March 2012, around Bohermeen. Nothing as alpine in profile as the Connemara course but might be useful as a long run in company over the distance.

That would be great, I must look it up. Thanks for the heads up

    Bloody typical,
Got a really bad sinus and viral infection that lasted most of December wasn't able to train with it. Got back into training on St Stephens days, 3 weeks out seems to have put me back a good bit. I know there's still a good bit of time before Connemara but I'm a long way off where I wanted to be .

I was hoping to have a 20k done by now (ultimate aim is DCM 2012), I doubt I'd do 10K right now . Anyhow, I'm out again tomorrow have a good hilly 8KM run planned

Don't worry it wont take you long to get back to where you were and further-just don't over do it in trying to make up for lost time.
