small reliable car suggestions

Hi. I currently have my first car a Peugeot 106: its a 1l, basic model and to be honest I think its time is coming to an end.(its given me a lot of grief in a relatively short period)
So I'm looking to get my second car but need advice. I'm looking for a car that looks attractive, nothing boy racey. Small, small engine. Electrics with power steering. Preferably a hatchback. I won't be spending a load of money so something within the 1000e range give(a bit) or take(a lot)!!
So yeah advice on what people think is a reliable car within those guidelines. I think engine wise id go to 1.3 tops. Just a getting around car that might handle a few one hour commutes. To give an idea iv been looking at Colts around the 00 mark.
    Advice ideas and suggestions welcome!!!
    Thanks

Barura will be on now to recommend the VW Polo with the 999cc engine...:p :D

However it's probably what I would recommend too!

Most of the cars Barura will link will be powersteering-less models.

OP if you could get a 00 Polo you would get powering steering, but I wouldn't expect electrics or central locking.

Micra would be a very safe bet, after that, a Fiesta would be safe if you brought someone who knew about cars with you. Check the oil level and rust levels (lol) on the Fiesta.

A polo is incomparable to a colt really, especially a one litre polo, stick to the colt idea op imo :)

    seat ibiza

great car cheaper than the polo for the same condition and year
i used to drive one from tubbercurry to ballina for work at redline revs all the way:a fast sweeping mountain road with loads of bumps and sheep. and she never even thought of rattling let alone having any isues. the mother in law had a 98 (she has a current jetta atm) and she saw the ibiza in tesco recently and asked the owner if she could buy it cos she missed it o much

Assuming you're talking about the 1.3CDTI unit in the astra, show me where you could find one of those for €1k.. Nice car though.

my mistake:( you would be doing verywell to pick up a astra for a Grand ..but i would imagine 4k/5k would get you a06/07 ? im looking at going to England in the newyear to buy a astra .They seem to be that bit better value and have a lot better spec

I like them though, would go to the UK too though to get a nicer spec model. I did my test in a corsa 1.3 diesel and it was a really nice car. Surprisingly fast when it was needed too. Not that I drove it that fast.

I know nothing of the Mitsubishi Colt and as such couldn't recommend one, I would recommend a 1999 Polo with power steering.

Check out the bangernomics thread, sometimes people go mental finding small cars for no reason and posting them there... :o

Thanks ppl. To be honest I've been fairly set on the colt just after reassurance that its good. Will be looking at 99 or 00. Don't like the look of new ones tbh.
    Thanks

    0 - 62mph:

    2005 Colt 1.3litre = 11 seconds... 1.1litre = 13.4 seconds..... Old Colt = 12.5

    Top Speed:

    2005 Colt 1.3litre = 112mph... 1.1litre = 103mph..... Old Colt = 106mph

    Fuel Economy:

    2005 Colt 1.3litre = 47.1MPG... 1.1litre = 51.4MPG..... Old Colt = 40.9MPG

The only thing i can fault the new colt 1.1litre is refinement at motorway speeds.. the old colt wins there...and the boot is a bit small... but seats slide to make a bigger boot.. or come out altogether.
