Closing apps

I have an iPhone 3 running 4.2.1 of the OS. A colleague was showing me his phone today where he could swipe the lower half of the screen and show all the apps that are running and close them one by one. Benefit is speeding up the phone. Where is the setting to do this or is only available on later OS?

My phone runs slow, very slow despite the fact there is no music, video and a total of 42 apps. Any tips to speed it up?

You can bring up the multitasking bar by double clicking the home button. It was added in iOS 4 but isn't supported on the 3G unfortunately.

Must be the 3 that it doesn't work on. My colleague has a 3GS and it works on that. How can I tell if I have a 3?

Is there any way of speeding it up ... it's like watching paint dry. So slow that people laugh at it.

Well if you are on iOS 4 and there's no multitasking bar then it must be an iPhone 3G. I'm not sure what you can do to improve performance. iOS 4 was always a dog on the 3G.

turn off spotlight search in settings to speed it up a bit, does it have a compass, if not it's a 3G

Also, as it doesn't have multitasking, you don't have to worry about closing apps. Just going back to the home screen will do that.
