Hi, out walking the dog this morning early and found a small sum of money [under €40]. As these are hard times I can't but worry that someone who is pinned to their collar lost it.
What should I do? or rather, what it expected of me under law?

bring it to garda station...see if its claimed...unlikely...and after a certain period of time if unclaimed i think you become entitled to it.

I wouldn't think you have any legal obligation to do anything (although I could be wrong).

As Howjoe1 said, you could bring it to local Guarda station. Or you could write a note & put it out where you found the money, stating you found some money in this location & provide your contact details so that if someone's out looking for it (and knows the correct sum of money) you can give it back to them. Of course this opens you up to all sorts of nutters, but it could alleviate any guilt you may be feeling.

Otherwise, I would imagine it's a case of "finders keepers."

Bring it to the Garda Station and get a receipt for it. If it isn't claimed in 6 weeks you can return and collect it.

Are you sure its 6 weeks? I thought it was much longer than that?

I remember as a kid finding a really expensive watch. Handed it in. Was able to claim it later but I thought it was something like six months. Possible changed since then
