Sky multiroom but no landline

    Hi,

Apologies if this has been asked before. I have a query in relation to landline requirements and the sky multiroom package. I got rid of the landline about 4 years ago to save some money because everyone in the house has mobiles. I had no issues with sky until this month when they sent me a letter saying that I have to connect both boxes to a landline otherwise I'll be charged double what I'm currently paying. The landline is used by sky to perform callbacks to check that I haven't given my extra sky box to someone else.

My problem is that a lot of phone companies only seem to offer landlines with broadband bundles. The cost of a landline only contract with eircom is working out at nearly €30 which I think is a bit high considering no one will use it to make any calls. Does anyone know of any cheap landline providers that I can use just to ensure that sky can call the boxes?
Sky are threatening to cut me off unless I pay the extra €90 every month which I find a bit harsh considering I haven't been connected to a landline for 4 years.

i actually went through this yesterday when i had to get my sky+ box reactivated, i hadnt used it for a while as i'd gotten rid of an old tv i had it connected to. the skyHD box in the living room was working fine and i had continued to pay the multi-room sub as i hadnt expected to take so long getting just the right tv.

so basically same as yourself, the agent told me after he had reactivated the card that they had not received a callback from the boxes since some time in 2010. i told him that i did not want my son ordering movies, etc and then getting a huge bill!

of course when he told me i'd be charged full price for both boxes, same as yourself, €90 thereabouts, i said i'd plug back in the phone lines. i have had multiroom for about five years now, and this is the first time i had an issue that i brought it to their attention.

i am with smart telecom and i get 10MB broadband for €40 a month, i think this is the cheapest and best value around in terms of DSL broadband anyway. so now it's just a matter of hooking up the extension phonelines again.

i asked them too how much would it be to upgrade the old sky+ box to a newer box and was told that i'd have to get a second HD box at €109, im definitely thinking about it though as the picture on a HD TV connected to the box via SCART is noticeably fuzzier! :(
